6 - The Canadian Champion, Fruday, January 7, 2000 SCOMMENT Be on guard --more crime is inevitable Perhaps it's only fitting that Milton's population boom is set to begin in a new millennium because very Sooin this town will undergo many changes -- though flot aIl of which wiII be for the better. With more people will inevitably come more crime. That's just something we have to accept. However, there are ways to deal with il and minimize our risk of becoming victims. Miltonians simpiy have to start taking greater precautions to guard against things like theft and home invasions. As reported in today's police blotter, many residents still aren't lock- ing up their belongings. Others are still leaving their cars running dur- ing quick trips to the convenience store. We've ail done this at one time or another, but it's a habit we must rid ourselves of. The few extra minutes it takes to warm up our vehi- dles again or secure our property is more than worth it to avoid being ripped off. We're not suggesting that this town is poised to become a haven for criminals -- just that the days of assuming we can't be victimized are gradually fading away. Milton is set to change, and we should be ready to change with it. 2. 1 1 YouYre a good[ mcan, Charles M. So!huiz. O UR READERS WRITE Parking ticket really a smaliprice topa~y Man wants answers from MPP Chudleîgh Dear ditor I'm writing ln response to Bob Tujmon's letter (January 4). A $40 parking ticket is a sma price to pay for leaving your car parked ovemnigbt fan a Street. If your car had been towed tbe coats would bave been mucb biglier. Furtberasore. 1 found your continents very orreaponsible and rather immature. Obviously you made the responsible choice not 10 drink and drive, but tbe next lime you go out to drink. tbink of your options aheoid of lime. Take a taxi cab 10 and from your destination, or walk or bave a designateti driver. You'shouid quit whining. 'Meic aMy person you have the raglit to be outraged witb is youeself. Herc'a snne faee advice. Gel an atti- tude atljualment for the new miliennfium. It will be a cheaper alternative. And remember, Bob, it's a privilege to, have a drBver's licence. Next lime think before you go Out and for goodneaa sake, don't even tbink about .getting intia your car and driving to avoid a parking fine as Ibis will probably cost you a much larg- er fine -- your driver's licence, your life, someone elaea lite, or botb. Mr. Chudleigh made îwo statements wilb regard 10 educa- lion. His words seem 10 be identi- cal 10 Ibose spoken by botb Mike Harris and Janet Ecker. 1 suspect that bis comments originate from a press release from tbe premier's office. It is neyer clear wbetber these are bis own views or n01. So, Mr. Cbudleigb. I and many otber of your constituents would like 10 know, in your own words, wby you voted tbe way you did on two important pieces of legislation recently. First, you voted against a pubic inquiry mbt the controoversial sbooîing deatb of Dudley George. For tbe past four years, your gov- ernment has spent millions of tax- payers dollars to, cover-up wbat aclually bappened tbat night on Seplember 6, 1995 oulside of Ipperwasb Provincial Park. Mr. Harris bas been calied 10 answer questions under oatb from lawyers for the family of Dudley George. He bas refused 10 attend. The attorney general and solicitor general ait tbe lime of tbe sbooling bave aloo ignored summonses 10 appear in court. 1 find Ibis particu- larly ironic since your govemment bas taken a strong law-and-order platformn. How cari you expect peo- ple 10 respect our laws and courts wben our own prenmier and top legal officiais do not? S0e Mr. Cbudleigb, wby did you vote against bolding a public inquiry into the sbooting once ail Bbc matters relaîed to the sbooting bad finally been dealt wiîb by tbe courts. As your govemmenî contin- ues witb a strategy Bo cover-up tbe events surrounding tbe sbooting, we are starting 10 believe Ibat Ibere is sometbing 10 bide. Tbe second important picce of legislation Ibat you voted on was tbe Fewer Municipal Politicians Act. Among otber tbings Ibis bill creates tbree megacities for Hamilton, Sudbury and Ottawa. The number of counicillors in these areas will be cut drastically. Also, the bill gives the provincial cabinet the power to change any law in the province of Ontario. My question 10 you Mr. Chudleigb is why did you vote in support cof this bill' Already, the minister responsible for the bill bas said tbat Halton wiII be looked ait in the future. If a similar bill cornes forward ihat wilI affect the citizens of North Halton. how will you vote? In Acton. we currently.have only one representative on regional counicil and Bwo on Halton Hulis counicil. Wbere do you stand on this issue. Mr. Cbudleigb? You have been voted to represent the constituency of Halton. Please cxplain why you voted the way that you did witb respect t0 the lpperwash inquiry anîd to the Fewer Municipal Politicians Act. 1 await your reply. Richard Boychuk Acton Pud by Steve Nease
