1999 in Review Year had share of heartbreak The Canadian Champion. WekdhaY, eulO29 r mm ask Heffron e fromn ANOTHER on page 18 adversity, the team went on to defend their Halton crown and then took three individ- ual medals and a second-place teamn finish at OFSAA. Biggest heartbreak E.C. Drury High's Kevin Heffron Iooked to have captured provincial wrestling gold until it was argued that the buzzer was sounded one second early in the finals. The match continued into sud- den death and went in bis Brampton Centennial opponent's favour - but onîy after another protest and lengthy delay. Going out ini style Milton Maverick Jim Leworthy capped a long and illustrious coaching career in local lacrosse by strikîng silver at the Founder's Cup in August. His retirement - which came at the samne time as his three big hometown veterans (Andrew Hartholt, Jim Leworthy Jr. and Graham Darling) flnished up their junior caneers - couldn't have been much sweeter. Bowled over Milton Lawn Bowling Club's fearsome foursome struck gold at provincials and went on to capture bronze at the Canadian Cbampionships. This marked the flrst time the local club ever had a national medal- wimning teamn at this level of lawn bowl- ing. Rivalry revived Miltonian Jeif Seeds being traded from his hometown Merchants to Georgetown was the initial spark that re-ignited a heat- ed and competitive rivalry between the neighbouring junior hockey clubs. The Raiders' emergence as a legitimate con- tender bad a lot to do with it, but having a talented and outspoken star at the centre of attention made it alI the more interesting. Straight shootérs Susan and Alex Banrie - a -local mother and son - eacb stnuck silver at the nation- al archery cbampionsbips. After flnishing fourth the previous two yeas, 12-year-old Alex was a mode], of accuracy and consis- tency this time around - as was his moth- er, who made bier national debut one to remember. Best surprise Tbougb perbaps not that sbocking with bighly gifted Dan McBride in the mix, Bisbop Reding's varsity football teamn anriving as a regional contender certainly wasn't expected - but definitely wel- comed after a previous faîl without any gridiron action due to a teachers' labour dispute. Worst surprise The cancellation of the annual Beaver Toumrament. once again, this wasn't an absolute sbock to that many - but cer- tainly a disappointing surprise. The holiday sbowcase had been a big part qf the sports community for a quarter of a century, so seeing it nixed was truly an upset. Bashing brothers Twin brothers Jeremy and Sbayne Ridley led the NCAA's BaIl State University Cardinals to their flrst ever reg- ular season league baseball championsbip in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Unfortunately their heavy hitting efforts didn't translate into victory comne playoff finie. e »e MANY on page 20 rn AUTO SERVICE W gmt a groat àal ta ke pour car rumnine no mler what Wntoe thr.ws at you. * Lube Ol &Filer90 Daiy Roadude auuiaaoe , 0" cdfNid" ul Ask W Uclils è ql m n. rf àe ue'y kci e £d REQUEST FOR COACHES RE 2000 - 2001 HOCKEY SEASON THE HALTON HURRICANES ARE NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR HEAD COACHES AT ALL AGE LEVELS, IF INTERESTED, CONTACT: NEW YEAR'SQ 2000 PARTY TIIL 4 AM BMÎG IN THE!
