TMe I 2-year-old gymnast opened bier provin- cial qualifying campaign witb an overaîl bronze medal showing recently in Burlington. Among Central Region Junior 2 class comn- petitors she stmuck silver on beam, placed fourth on floor and finished f ifth on vault - which combined to earn bier a trip to the podium in the all-around scoring. The preteen led a group of nine local gymnasts who aIl had solid performances in the first of three qualifying events for next spring's Ontario Championships. Ashley Quinn, Kristen's age-class teammate, took sixth spot in the overaîl standings - on the strength of bier bronze medal effort on bars. She was also quite impressîve on vault, pIac- ing fourth. Versatile Alexis Stoffels, 14, came away with top finishes in ail four events to take fifth in the all-around standings of Senior 1. Her finest efforts were reserved for beamn - in which she secured bronze. She also placed fourth on both bars and floor and grabbed sixth spot on vault. It was too close to cail between Valerie Massel and Christina Shipowick when it came to Junior 1 beam. The teammates each tumned in no-fali routines to tie for fourtis. Christina also received a fifth-place ribbon on bars while Valerie was sixth on floor. Nine-year-old Julie Gagnon made bier debut and although nerves may have been the best of ber at times - espe- cially on the beam -she did comne away with a respectable lOth spot on vault in the Pre Novice 1 loop. Securing sixtb spot in, the all-around scoring of the Novice 1 division was Jaimi Fellows. The 10-year-old AahIêy Quinn highlighted bier campaign by placing fifth on bars. Teammate Stephanie Deumer meanwhile, fin- ished fourth on floor and sixth on vault. Christina Chimonides rounded things with a tourth-place showing on bars. "Ail tihe girls competed very well for the first meet of the season," comment head coach Janet Camopbell. "We have a little fine tuning to do for tie next meet in January. Soine of thse girls are already in good position for securing spots on the Central Region provincial team. "We hope for the saine consistency at our next qualifier in Brantford." Thse Milton Springers Gymnastics Club is now accepting registrations for its nine-week winter session beginning in January.
