4The sky's the limit for this young achiever By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion or Milton's Lauren MacDonald, making the grade refers to much more than just an 'amazing academic average of 94 per cent. That alone is certainly impressive - but the overachieving local teenager bas so many things to be proud of on top of stag- geringly bigh marks. And now sbe' Il have to add one more item to that gmowing list, since winning Scotiabank's Young Achiever Award. The presti- gious prize was bestowed upon hier ast week as part of the Toronto Sun's 'Women On The Move' - a yearly celebration honouring extraordinary females. "Lt was a pretty profound expenience to be in the company of so many accomplished women," said the I 8-year-old Bishop Reding OAC student, who was in an award-winning class of six that also included CFRB/TorontoSun Female Newsmaker of the Year 'Jane Doe'. Ms MacDonald eamned s place among the illustrious group with extracurricular efforts that are almost too numerous to mention. Among tIhe many roles she's assumed are a school council rep, boy's volleyball coach, day camp leader, cashier, math tutor, hos- pital volunteer and tennis champ. "Sbe's sure done a lot of good thinga," remarked guidance counsellor and nomînator Luisa St. John. "Lauren's namne came to mind rigbt away for this award. She's a very, very deserving recipient." Added Ms MacDonald, "I guess it's a little overwhelming when everytbing is written down like that. I'd.deflnitely have to consider myself a workabolic. And wben I take on a project, 1 want to do it to perfection." She credits ber parents - botb educators - with providing that drive and confidence. "Tbey instilled a great desire in me to accomplisb as mucb as possible." Wbile Ms MacDonald bas done a great deal of note in thse comn- munity, ber most significant achievement to date came a long way from home. This year'a missionary trip to Guatemala - an undertaking for wbicb sbe's particular proud - gave bier a chance to belp those mucb less fortunate as well as an opportunity to put lufe in per- spective. "Lt was a profound experience," she said, of interacting witb cbildren wbo bad next to notbing in terms of material possessions yet enjoyed tremendous inner strengtb and spirit. "It really made me appreciate wbat we bave bere." Ms MacDonald will be graduating a semester early and bopes to be admitted into the bigbly selective commerce program at Queen's University - a course wbicb enjoys a job placement track record of virtually 100 per cent. Judging by the local teen's past and present courtsbip witb per- fection, one bas to figure she's a safe bet to make thse grade once again.
