r i e Canadian Oham~îibh, FrfdéV, nit~.r 26, 1~-'9 ~Deidre DolI cards on sale in fundraiser LUURlII~ lui a By IRENE GENTLE The Champion C hristmas is a time of giv- ing. And with four holi- day cards designed by the Deidre and Friends Foundation, the gift can be one of health and life. Ciem Scholtz wîll seli the carda at Milton Mail tomorrow. Tbey can also be purchased at Nortb End Nissan and Milton Chrysier Dodge as weil as Don Cbeny's Grapevine and Heady's, botb located at the mail. Deidre Schoitz could count ber age on the fîngers of one hand when ber battie with severe idiopathic apiastie anemia hit the front pages in town. At the time, the tike's lifeline was lassoed to the hope of finding a suitabie donor for a bone marrow transplant. And that process can best be iikèned to tinding a needie in a haystack. But a donor was found and now Deidre is a happy, healthy nine-year-oid, reported her mom, Liz. "Deidre is a miracle. She tmiy is," said Ms Scboitz. "Sbe's so weil. If you saw ber, you d neyer know she was iii." Extensive chemotherapy, radiation and drugs used to conquer the condition have left their mark on the cbiid, who wiii always be on guard for failout from ber chiidhood ilinets. But iateiy the brittie fear of a reoccur- rence has faded. "Something attacked ber bone marrnw and ieft ber witb this dead bone marrow," said Ms Scboitz. "But we don't know wbat caused it." And thal tneans it could returu. But aller tive years, the marrow transplant is consid- ered to be successfui. So these days the famiiy is focused on providing information and emotional sup- port for families in the grim grips of bone marrow diseases. And once the foundation really gets rolling, they're boping to add linanciai support as well. "We ran into tome frustrating situations at tbe time," said Ms Scboltz. "Hopefully we'li be abie to assist peopie. It's kind of exciting." The Cbristmas cards ail feature tbe Deidre doli, a pink and purple-garbed wooden doil that bas become synonymous with the real child's ferocious fight for ber life. A package of eight carda, featuring two of each design, retails for $10, with ail the proceeda going to the Deidre and Friends Foundation. The carda soid out iast year, whicb was the famiiy's fîrat go at it. Tbis year, 4,000 bave been printed and bopes are high to seli out once more. Deidre herself heipa out, but it's too soon to say whether she'll be St the maIl with ber dad to seli carda this Saturday, said Ma Schoitz. "She is a great littie saiesman," she said. "She'li probably be in and out and about. We try not to make ber the focus so much." The littie girl aiso likes to heip others going througb bone marrow transplants. Wben the family visita the hospitai for ber now annuai check-up, she wandera up and down the hall, looking in on patients. "Sbe'ii gn in there and say, 'Hang in there. It gets better. Look at me,"' said Ms Schoitz. "She bas a wisdom beyond ber years." Deidre may have won ber life, but she already knows too mucb about lots. Iii the depths of ber ailment, abe becanie fast frienda witb two others fîghting bone marrow conditions. With desperate ilineas in common, the cbiidren and their families iinked up. The kids were called the tbree musketeers. But of tbose brave muaketeers, only Deidoe bas survived. The memory of the bat musketeers is bonoured witb tbe symboi of the Deidre and Frienda Foundation, wbicb depicts a tear drop and a broken beart wbicb, wben turned on its side, becomes tbe number tbree. "You're bappy for your succeas but we wonder bow did it work tbat we were suc- cessful and others weren't," said Ms Scboltz.
