Dear Editor: As a iife-long resident of rural Campiselîville (on Guelph Line at Steeles Avenue), I feel compelled to respond to a letter from Jack Murphy, whîch was published in your paper on October 26. 1 know how privileged 1 am to have grown up in an area so beauti- fuI, with some of the loveliest sceneiy in the country titerally in my own backyard. I may be able to clarify the parking sign situation for him. The two specific roads that Mr. Murphy mentioned are both very busy paved roads with signiticant traffic on a daily basis. The shoul- ders are very narrow and aren't paved. When people stop their cars in order to get out to walk, they often need to spend a certan amounit of lime at the aide of the car -- unload- ing family members, strollers, bikes and pets. Sometimes they're not as careful as they should be when croasing the roads, stepping out fromt between paked cars in front of oncoming traffic (travelling at speeds of 60 kmi/h or greater). This creates a dangerous situation for both the pedestrian and those dri- ving on the road. I have witnessed several near accidenta in my own neighbour- hood under these circumatances. We are so fortunate that the Conservation Halton manages mucis of the land surrounding the areas Mr. Murphy has mentioned. They not only maintain trails for ail 10 enjoy. but they provide ample parking areas where cars can be stopped and unloaded safely. They also provide maps for many of the trails. This service has a minimal cost attached, and I think that the benefit far outweighs the cost. A year-long membership (for car and occupants) 10 aIl thse parks maintained by the Conservation Halton couts only $75.00. Perisapa Mr. Murphy and others who wish to'enjoy the local purchasing a membership and therefore save themsetves the risk of a parking ticket, while support- ing our local conservation authori- ty. This will help to enaure the maintenance of tihe traits for every- one's enjoyment, while promoting thse safety of both the hikers and those using the roada.
