By IRENE GENTLE The Champion Fashion has always been about Iooking good. But the Iatest trends go a long way in feel- ing good, too. That's because the latest news in fashion is caring. At least it is at Lundstroms, which bas stores in Oakville and Toronto. Theoe, breast cancer, women's issues, aboriginal con- cerns, poverty, environinentalisin and size bones of contention are aIl part of the package of looking great and feeling hetter. And ail were wrapped up tigbt at the annual Lundstroms breast cancer fashion show/fundraiser, said Lesley Goertzen, the dynamic former owner of Green Ginger in Milton. In past years, the show bas raised a combined total of $73,000 for cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital. The tally of the most recent show, held Octoher 17 at Halton Huis Place, is not yet available. But the response froin the selI-out crowd wast encouraging, said Ms Goertzen. *'Everyone is phoning and saying they loved it," she said. "Mhe reaction was great. There were lots of claps." One reason msy be the special fabrics that have helped revolu- tionize fashion in recent years. Like the warmn, soft luxurious fabrica made froin, believe it or not, recycled plastic hottles. At Lundstroins, eco-spun fleece bas heen transformed into wonderfully cozy jackets and blankets in eight brilliant colours, customn made for cuddling up on cold winter nights. "It is so soft, it is wonderfisl," said Ms Goertzen. Buying a new coat this season can also be guilt-fr-ee. Lundstroms is offering a $75 discount on néw winter coats pro- vided a freshly cleaned old coat is hrought to the store. The used coats will then be distributed to women who couldn't otherwise afford one. Looking good bas always heen in style, but thanks to the new fahrics, it can be comfortable, too. Stretchy fabrics that fit close to the body without pinching prove that fashion doesn't have to hurt to look hot, hip and sexy. Flashy and fitted clothing made a splash at the recent fashion show's spring 2000 preview. "It was really trendy and to the body," said Ms Goertzen, who emceed the event. "A lot of lycr."~ But the falV/winter line featured a more elegant style, designed to take the old millennium out with a seductive sizzle. That meant st.retch velvets and a series of gloriously iridescent fabrics in shades of Leal, lime, copper and black. "It takes on different colours when you walk,- said Ms Goertzen. Lashings of fabric help to create a more luxe feel.
