Canai&Ioc» 8. t I M to -= fo917 More student jobs but Milton lags trend [aa By IRENE GENTLE The Champion The summer sizzied with job opportunities for students, accottiing to a new Summer Jobs Partnership pmogram. Tise programn runs on the coordi- nated steam of Shseridan Coiiege, Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) and tise YMCA. The season saw a 20 per cent jump over last year's figures, said tise pro- grams' marketing coordinator Lynne Murray. But tise increase was slightiy more Ianguid in Milton. About 743 stu- dents aged 15-24 got a job through tise prograin tisis past summer, a hike of about five per cent.* "There might not have been as mucis growth in Milton. There may not have been as many new business- es starting." expiainedl Ms Murray. "But tisat is stili a good increase." Also, 649 students in Halton HMils got a job through thse prograin, coin- pared to 1,230 in Oakviiic and 1,389 in Buriington. Those numbers reflect jobs tisat were snapped up before tise end ofluily. A muscular economy helped hike tise job count for students this season, but more has to be done, said Ms Murray. That is because youtis unemploy- ment stiil hovers in tise 16 per cent range, sise said. "Tise economy is definitely stronger tisan it was and unempioy- ment is better but tie youtis stiii seemn to be having problems getting work," said Ms Murray. 'Youtis unemploy- ment is tise higist group when tisey do statistics at Statistics Canada." That will be bad news for tise whole country once tise baby boomers begin to retire, she said. "We'Ii have a lot of people who aren't experienced being asked to mun companies," said Ms Murray. But to help, employment incen- tives are in place. In one federai pro- grain, the govemment pays tise mini- mum wage ($6.85) of students for up ta, six weeks. That shlows employers ta top up their wages, providing a better deal for students struggling with higis tuition costs and student ioans. "Most businesses couldn't hire stu- dents for $6.85 because of rising tuition costs," said Ms Murray. "Students can afford to be a little more choosy." And a provincial prograni offers a $2 an hour wage subsidy ta employ- ers willig ta isire students. "There are a lot of oealy good pro- gramns; tisat people don't know about," said Ms Murray. And tisey are not ail for students oniy. One program, called Job Connect, offers a $4 an isour subsidy for youtiss aged 16-24. Il also helps them bone up on inter- view skills and resumne wrtting. "Il is a ittle bit of heip for youtis," said Ms Murray. "It Ieads theni in the night direction." Another program offers a subsidy of up to $7,500 for employers willing to hire someone currently on employment insurance. That pwgramn often iselpS workers in their forties and over, another probiem category in empioyment. But employers who want to cash in on the Student inventives should begin early, contacting their local branch of HRDC no later than Februry or Marcis of next year. "They may as weil taire advantageL of government programa," said Ms- Murray. "Tisey may be able to pay someone a little more or hire an extra student." For those interested in Job Connect, eaul Sheridan Coilege St 845-9430, ext. 8135. For tihe program offering tise $7,500 subsidy, ask for ext. 8088 at tise college. &'ê.½,ou galher Io qive «75hancs," ilet me Jhank yjou 6cr atkninq 95 main st.
