Going the distance carnes new weight for volleyball Mustangs By STEVE LeBLANO The Champion Tise Mustang senior boys volleyball team's road to recovery bas been littereri with obstacles. Milton District High School, who won only a couple of times last fali, began training camp with disappoint- ing numbers and nearly isad to pull out when a few of those players were lured away to thse football field. To make matters worse, this season's revamped for- mat for competition - tisat now bas gamnes going to 25 points instead of 15 and winners decided by best-of- tive ratiser than hest-of-three matches - is sure to put tise local squad and otbers witb smaller rosters at a dis- arivantage. That was fairly evident during their home opener against Burlington's Nelson Lords Thursday. MD took tise first round 25-21 and beld an early Iead in gaine two - at wbicis point fatigue slowly but sure- ly started to set in. The 'Stangs had little chance of combating tisis, with fewer substitutes than their guests, and ended up dropping tise next three contests 25-15, 25-23,25-22. ise match - altisougis more fast-paced than usual witb points awarded during every rally now, compared to before when only tise serving teamn could score- lasted nearly 90 minutes. This is significantly longer tisan tise typical show- down used to go under tise old miles, whicb were recently changed at every level of tise sport in order to boost its excitement level and popularity. Added McCollum, "And we went only four gRosses. A fiftis would have made it anotiser 15 to 20 minutes. Considering tdûs and tise fact we only had one practîce witbin tise Iast week, tise guys did poetty weIl." Led by Andrew Hryciw and as Murray,. MD battled back gamely in rounds three and four - closing wide gaps and pusbing tise visitors to tise limit witis strong blockIng. Also, Hryciw deliveoed at least two dozen kilîs on the aftemoon and was especially sharp on long ral- lies tisrougb tise early stages of play. ise 'Stanga, wiso wilI be bard poessed to finish top six and grab a playoff spot in Halton Region's Richardson Division, bost tise Lester B.
