The Canean Charmion, Tuesday. September 7, I999-43 French connects with an OHL team Mark French's coaching career is on tihe oise. The Jr. B Merchants graduate spent the last year as an assistant at the University of Guelph. He'll continue that mile this sea- son - but in the more prestigious and challenging Ontario Hockey League. Foench bas been hired by thse Norths Bay Centennials and began bis new job late last montb. "I'm really excited about going to the OHL," remarked the 28-year-old, who was interim, head coach of the Brock University Badgers two seasons back. "Last year I put myseif in a great position to mentor with a good coach (Guelph Gryphons' Marlin Muylaert). With North Bay, 1 think I'm doing thse same." Io the spring he had accepted a job coacbing at the University of West Virginia - a Division III school witb little hockey tradition or success - but when Centennials skipper Mike Kelly camne cali- ing. the decision to head north instead of south was a rather easy one. 'Mie Miltonian is now North Bay's num- ber one assistant. Since French signed on with the Centennials. Muylaert bas resigned (rom the Gryphons to take over tise hockey pro- gram at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Recause French now bas a job, he is out of the ninning for the post. He admits that if the position was available to him, il would be difficult to chose between the OHL and a head coaching job in Canadian university hockey. a *#itive tour through s 'Irish tour features p some new challenges and some oki culture By STEVE LeBLANO The Champion The Milton Monarchs' last hurrah had both an international flavour and a taste of sweet success.
