Recently they issued an economic policy statement focusing on tax relief. The Federal Government pays close attention to our national office especially in developing their budgets as the members employ millions of Canadians. Their comments follow, "The federal government must make significant inroads on tax reduction over the next five years, beginning with a clear commitment in the next two fiscal years. 'he overtaxation of Canadians has placed the government in a more favorable financial position where it can afford to cut back on the amounit of money it collects from its citizens without affecting its spending programs." "Overburdened taxpayers have experienced a marked deterio- ration in their disposable incomes and standard of living. High taxes have threatened our business competitiveness and our ability to attract and retain investment. Significant corrective action must be taken now. "The challenge for the government is Il balance prudent and responsible financial management with the fiscal demands of al Canadians. Consequently, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce developed a fiscal strategy and recommendations to assist with this endeavor." "As an example, for a family of four eamning $65,000 in Ontario - this'strategy translates into an extra $474 in tIr pockets. And as a taxpayer, you will be pleased to note that these tax reduction recommendations stem from projected fiscal surpluses and do not cut into government programn spending levels. In fact, the Chamber strategy allows for spending levels to be adjusted for inflation and population growth, thus providing the government with ample flexibility and therefore ensuring that the country's finances do not retum to a deici. The Milton Chamber of Commerce supports this position and urges our elected officiaIs to heed the voices of our great country.
