Minor bantam A Rangers golden at season-ending tournament The Oakville minor bantam A Rangers claimed gold at the season-ending Allstate All Canadians hockey tournament recently hosted by the Applewood Coyotes. Oakville outscored its opposition by a combined margin of 23-11 on route to wins over the Innisfil Winterhawks, East Gwillimbury Eagles, Lorne Park Ojibwa, Markham Islanders and the Mississauga-based Applewood squad. Members of the team are Christopher Vezina, Justin Hui, Rick Schutte, Kyle Renpenning, Adam Grant, Adam Grace, Nicolas Dupuis, Matthew Stubbert, Jake Proszek, Ben Schledewitz, Ryan Rudderham, Tom Campbell, Ethan Wilson, Jack Guimaraes, Francis Guay, Jacob Saunders and Ryan Menne. The Rangers are coached by Dean Renpenning, Mark Stubbert and Jerry Schutte, and Steve Saunders is the trainer. Athletiques runner earns silver, sets personal bests at provincial meet Athletiques International Track and Field Club's Charissa Teal recently earned a silver medal and set two personal bests in her competitive debut at the Minor Track Association's Ontario Indoor Championships in Toronto. Teal, 12, was second in the atom girls' 800-metre race walk and fifth in the 200m sprint. Her time in the 800m (5:12.29) was faster than the time she had set in practice two weeks earlier on a 750m course. In the 200m, Charissa Teal Teal crossed the line in 34.79 seconds. Oakville claimed the first-to-six-points series 7-3. Members of the Rangers squad, which also won the Bob Giroux tournament in December and finished second to Milton in Tri-County league play, are Andrew Brown, Brayden Gillespie, Caled St-Onge, Cody O'Neill, Cooper Simpson, Daniel Rokicki, Ethan Noble, Gunnar Popek, Kaden Thomson-Hill, Kaylan Lucksiri, Kaylie Lucksiri, Owen Pagniello, Robby Gray, Salem Johnson, Tyson Rowan, William Taylor and Zachary Wadden. Beran, seeded 14th in singles, defeated fellow Ontarian Filip Obucina 6-3, 7-5 in the final after posting three-set victories in both the quarter-final and semifinal rounds. In doubles, Beran and Obucina teamed up to down Dylan Bednarczyk and Harrison Scott 7-5, 6-1 in the championship match. Beran and Obucina, the third seed, lost just one set in the tournament. A week prior to the ITF tournament, Beran finished third at the under-18 Rogers Junior Nationals in Markham. Seeded first, Beran was upset in the semis by third-ranked Alejandro Tabilo (3-6, 3-6) but bounced back to win the bronze-medal game 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 over Stefan Frljanic. Beran's next chance to win a national title will come at the outdoor Canadian championships in August.
