Athletiques runner earns silver, sets personal bests at provincial meet Athletiques International Track and Field Club's Charissa Teal recently earned a silver medal and set two personal bests in her competitive debut at the Minor Track Association's Ontario Indoor Championships in Toronto. Teal, 12, was second in the atom girls' 800-metre race walk and fifth in the 200m sprint. Her time in the 800m (5:12.29) was faster than the time she had set in practice two weeks earlier on a 750m course. In the 200m, Charissa Teal Teal crossed the line in 34.79 seconds. Beran, seeded 14th in singles, defeated fellow Ontarian Filip Obucina 6-3, 7-5 in the final after posting three-set victories in both the quarter-final and semifinal rounds. In doubles, Beran and Obucina teamed up to down Dylan Bednarczyk and Harrison Scott 7-5, 6-1 in the championship match. Beran and Obucina, the third seed, lost just one set in the tournament. A week prior to the ITF tournament, Beran finished third at the under-18 Rogers Junior Nationals in Markham. Seeded first, Beran was upset in the semis by third-ranked Alejandro Tabilo (3-6, 3-6) but bounced back to win the bronze-medal game 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 over Stefan Frljanic. Beran's next chance to win a national title will come at the outdoor Canadian championships in August.
