Turn in old electronics for good On Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26, residents can bring all of their old computers, household electronics and appliances, and scrap metal to the Upper Oakville Shopping Centre, 1011 Upper Middle Rd. E. That's because Golden Horseshoe Green Tech (GHGT) is once again partnering up with the Upper Oakville Shopping Centre and Wentworth Metal Recycling for its semi-annual waste collection event. It runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This is the third year the program has been staged at the Eighth Line and Upper Middle Road shopping centre. To date, more than 100,000 pounds (45,359 kilograms) of material has been collected and recycled properly. "All proceeds from the event will allow GHGT to expand its Community Electro Technology Lab, which provides alternative, hands-on technological education for at-risk youth, as well as low-cost computing solutions to local schools, community organizations and residents," stated a press release. 13 | Wednesday, May 15, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com MASSIVE SIDEWALK SALE! `6-pack' pulls for JDRF Lucy McFarland, Youth Ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) invited Ryan `6-pack' Lapadat, world champion power lifter, to Pilgrim Wood School to bring awareness and attention to Type 1 Diabetes. The 2012 world powerlifting champion tugged a 26,500-pound, full-sized school bus in front of a crowd of nearly 400 Pilgrim Wood students -- each of whom donated a `toonie' to see him do it. The students raised $760 in change and an additional $280 in donations for fellow student Lucy McFarland, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and will be walking for a cure later this spring in the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes in Mississauga. "Some of the people I do these events with are actually worried about me towing this bus when it rains like this," Lapadat told the students in an assembly that took place following a rainy morning that left the roads slick. "They're not sure whether or not I can do it. I'm going to tell you the truth, I don't know whether or not I'm going to be able to tow this bus, but I'm going to tell you, I guarantee you this, for Lucy, for you kids, for all the adults that are watching who forgot how to believe, I'll fight for every single inch. Are you guys with me?" Lapadat was then cheered on as he pulled the bus about 100 feet. Having recently moved to Oakville from Guelph, Lapadat spoke about how he loved superheroes growing up and how he aspired to be one. He said he and his best friend would train at recess to become superheroes. "The teachers, our parents, everybody laughed," said the 33 year old. His friend wanted to fly; Lapadat's own dream was to have super strength and to use it to help others. "It would be cool to walk down the street, see a kid trapped under a car and boom, you just flip over that car, just like that. How cool would that be?" he asked. "But see, when you get a little older, people will start to tell you that these kinds of dreams are out see Youth on p.15 ALL DRESSES OUTSIDE! $ Regular $179.99 - $249.99 NOW 49.99 Watch Us Fashions 1131 Nottinghill Gate (Glen Abbey) (Store Manager) Kim Karen (Owner) OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 905-827-2271 SPRING TUNE UP SPECIAL NOW $179 SAVE $100!
