Nuisance noise and dust from the excavation of a Canadian Pacific Railway yard on Eighth Line in Hornby helped 72-year-old retîred fariner Stuart McMiIlan decide to throw in the towel on land his family bas owned since 1865. But an upcorning closure of Eighth Line bas accel- erated his decision to go, he said. "We've been there ail our lives and now we' ve got to tuin the page and move," he said. "It's going to be hard." Dumping and trespassing in the ares will likely intensify once the road is closed, Mr. McMillan charged. "Once you get a dead end, tbe garbage is unreal," he said. "We got an old Chesterfield, an old mattreas and old chairs." Efforts by CPR representatives to address Mr. McMillan' s concerna have not been enough to con- vince hlm to rernain in bis lifeon borne. "1'bey've heen in ail the tirne telling us wbat tbey're going to do," be said. "But the railway, you can't beat tbem." Letters addressed to Mr. McMillan froin CPR 'Iron Higbway' director Alan Parry and Randy Marsb, manager of govemrment and public affaira at CPR, noted that dumping bas not traditionally been a prob- lemn in the area. The so-called 'Iron Higbway' is to be a bigb-vol- urne transfer station for tractor trailer loada travelling tbe Detroit-Montreal corridor. The truckloads are to be rnounted on rail flatcara and sent to various destina- tions front Hornby. They atated tbat discussions witb Milton public works personnel revealed that dumping ia usually lim- ited to spring dlean-up time. A recent on-site inspection by CPR staff uncovered a trash bag' s worth of coffee cupa and a few old appli- ances. Most had appeared to be on the site for some timeç the lettera said. But to limit future problema, CPR bas offered to erect 'No dumping' signa on Eigbtb Line between Denry Road and the railway tracks. Though Iighting and activity levels at the yard would make Mr. McMillan's property an unwelconie area for loiterers and trespassers, the area could be monitored by Halton police, Milton public works, CP Police and terminal staff, the letters added. Despite these assurances, Mr. McMillan decided lt bow out of the battle wben he put bis bouse up for sale in May. 'They see the railway up there and the dead end and they don' like it."
