umplon, Tuemley, June 8,1999 22 - The Canadien Os L50Lier8824 -1oell finishes in tp1 vSEELOBLANO The Champion The future of local track and field is here - and its name is Michelle Doell. Bishop Reding's ninth grader put the fin- ishing touches on a sensational season this past weekend during the Ali-Ontario OFSAA Championsbips at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium. Ans endurance racer with at least three more years of higb achool competition ahead of her, the 15-year-old placed in tIhe top 10 at two events - establishing anme intriguing possibilities for the near future. "I'd actually hoped to do a little better at provin- cials, but on the whole I'rn really happy with my efforts this spring." said Doell, who's alan an accom- plished cross-country rnner. "Bigger and better per- formances are stilI to comne. Next year will be very exciting." Her best efforts carne in thse 800mn Saturday morning when she trirnmed three seconds off hier personal best, clocking in at 2:21.06 and taking third in hier heat. Unfortunately in the event finals - just four hours and finished eighth overaîl. She was il seconds behind the winner, who nearly broke thse meet record. 'he Royals' lone representative wasn't quite at hier best in the 1,500rn and ended up ninth, in a particular- ly strong field. In the more competitive of the two preliminary heats, Doell placed third with a tirne of 4:57.77 Thursay evening. Off ber foras She had given just enough to secure advancement to the finals, Iooking to save as much energy as possible for the following night's big race. Only then the local racer's best was not forthcorning; as a 4:59.21 effort - roughly five seconds off her top individual time, set late last month during the Southern Regionals at Hamilton's McMaster University - was aIl she could muster. "fiat really wasn't a great race for mie," admitteti Doell, who holds Bishop Reding Secondary School records in three distance events including the 400m, 800rn and 1,500rn. By STEE LOBLANO The Champion The Georgetown Bulldogs are at a point now where they'd gladly accept a littie charity - if it meant breaking out of a season-long losing skid. The only problern is, acts of kindness in local lacrosse circles are difficuit to corne by. None were offered at John Tonelli Sports Centre Friday, when the Jr. B Mavericks dominated flrst and final period play en route to a convincing 13-6 victory. The win pushed the 1999 Founder's Cup hosts to 8- 5 and further srrengthened their hold on second-place in the Mid-West Division. Meanwhile, the hapless 'Dogs fell to 0-13 and - with just nine games remaining - have virtually no hope of making the playoffs. A 1-0 lead for 3:16 was aIl the generosity the Mavs would provide their guests during the evening clash. Prom there they amassed six unanswered goals and weoe pretty much on cruise convroi the rest of the way. Enjoying the lion's share of the scoring pie were first-line partners Jimmy Leworthy Jr. and Chris Powless - who' ve become a dangerous duo since Powless was acquired from Six Nations two weeks ago. Collectively they figured in eight goals and pulled the trigger on seven of those, with Leworthy Jr. notch- ing an individual season high of four and Powless picking up the hat-trick. Leworthy Jr. also delivered perhaps the most enter- taining moment of the night when hie squared off with Bulldog Jeff Newman. Each unloaded with several authoritative shots to the other in one of the fiercest fights this season. Overaîl, north Halton's combatants were fairly aggressive and confrontational throughout the late Jlmmy Lsworthy Chris PowlesS stages of thse garne, rnuch of which the Mavs spent shorthanded. Earning his eighth season victory was Andrew Dowdell - whose chin continues to be an appealing target for opposing snipers. Captain Andrew Hasihoît tallied twice, bringing his season total to 34, and Coty Leigh banked his 29th of the year. Milton's other rnarksmen were workhorse Kacgen Sherriff, Brent Moyer and Paul Wade. Brad Kouyoumjian and Fred Rooyman led offen- sively for the 'Dogs with three points each. Maverick notes: Veteran Shane McConnell was a little more active in thse play and created anme quality scoring opportunities Friday ... Milton's Matt Ventura, drafted by thse Six Nations Arrows over the winter, suited up for the Mavericks Friday, though hie saw limited action ...
