The Canadiari ChanfiC More muddy water woes prompt new explanations By IRENE GENTLE The Champion Limited rainfail last summer and this spring may be partialiy to biame for Milton's muddy-looking tap watei. The two abnormaliy dry seasons have contributed to elevated mani- ganese leveis in water systems across the province, Halton's direc- toi of environmental services, Ric Robertshaw told Milton counicil recently. "A number of municipalities have been teporting higher mani- ganese levels than in the past," he said. Not harmful Though manganese will make water look unpleasant, it is not harmnful, assured Halton's environ- mental health specialist John Hall. "The water quality meets and supercedes thse standards set by thse Ministry (of Hçalth)," he assured counicil. To ensure water quality, HaIton water is tested for a slew of sub- stances such as e coli, iron, tri- hal .omethane and coiiform on a weekly, quarteriy and yearly basis. So far, Milton's water has always come out dlean. That includes the sludgy-brown water some residenits discovered coming out of their taps in early May. "It appears that manganese is the problem. That is not a health risk at ail," said Mr. Hall. "It is one of the lest toxic substances on earth." Improving the appearance of the dingy looking water is simple, said Mr. Hall. "AIl you'd have to do is filter it or let it ait for a while.and it would be clear as crystal," he said. "There is nothing in my mind to be con- cerned about with the Milton drinking water." A watermain break at Main and Fulton on May i also iikely con- tributed to the probiem, said Mr. Robertshaw. At that time, the Region oeceived up to 45 cafl from concemned resi- dents on the matter. Main breaks create water flow disruptîons wbich can cause parti- cles of manganese or iron te break off thse pipes and enter the system. Any change in water flow can create a disturbance in thse system, said Mr. Robertshaw. "If the demand in one aiea was very different than normal, there may have been a flow reversai," hm said. "Whenever you have a flow reversai, it can cause a distur- bance." To minimize the chance of parti- dles from water pipes getting into the system, the Region is set to tackie the second of a two-pbase watermaln cleaning program. Watermains cleaned Last summer, ail amail and mid- sized watermains were cleaned. Work on the large trunk mains wili commence shortiy. That couid cause temporary sup- ply problema for some residents, warned Mi. Robertshaw. Water couid be tumned off from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on several different days, particularly in the Peni Road area. "We'll be looking at providing tbem with as much notice as possi- bie," said Mr. Robertshaw. Thal phase of the prograni is scheduled to be completed by mnid- Septen-ber.
