18 - Tho Canadian Champion, Tuosday, June 1, 1999 Spartan Warriors put the hurt on Miton By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion Painful, agonizing, excruciating. Any or ail of these could be used to characterize the Jr. B Mavericks' crossover into the second haif of regular season play Friday at John Tonelli Sports Centre. One by one, local players feul victim to the overly aggressive tactics of the visiting Spartan Wanriors. Darryl Brown suffered a cut fmnger, a dazed Andrew Dowdell was yanked fromn the net after taking four heavily shot balis to the bead and Jason Ford went down witb a senious knee injury. If that wasn't difficuit enough to watcb, Milton came up on the short end of an ove rtime decision, 11 -8. Following a valiant comeback bid - which forced an extra ses- sion out of the Far West Division front-runners - the Mavs' scoring well ran dry in the fourth frame. As a resuit, Jim Leworthy's crew dropped to 7-4 on the season. They remain second in the Mid West, witb hopes of overtaking the top seated Mohawke fading fast - especially afler Friday's highly physical encouniter that no doubt Ieft them vuinerable for tomorrow evening's visit to Elora. Sporadic offence In front of a sparse crowd, Milton delivered one of its more spirited efforts this year against the Warriors, particularly during the opening and ciosing moments of regulation. Dowdell was rock-solid between tbe pipes for bis seventb sea- son win.
