+OUR READERS WRITE We don 't want our town to become another Brampton Dear Editor: Today I became aware of the proposai to extend James Snow Parkway between Fourth Line and Fifth Line in the Milton area. I arn writing to express my concerna. According to the James Snow Parkway Environmental Asseasment Study - Environimental Study Report prepared by McCormick Rankin Corporation (MRC) (page E-2), "On tbe basis of investigations carried out during tie study by speciaiists, it is not expected that there wiIl be any significant effecta, resuit- ing from thse recommnended improvemnent plan, that cannot be mlitigated." 1 can't quite see how building a four-lane roadway on farmland and through woodlota from Milton ta Oakville, acrosa the east Sixteen Mile Creek could not have significant environmental effecta. I can't aee how a roail that is ta be built ta accommodate thse expansion of Milton by 50,000 people could not have signifi- cant environmental effecta. But then, I'm not a specialiat. I rememnber David Suzuki saying that, althougis he spent yeara studying thse fruit fiy and was considered ta be an expert on it, lie really didn't understand the firat thing about it. He found it absurd tisat iumans could be sa arrogant as ta believe that tbey could even begin ta understand the environmental impacts of their actions. The report states that tbe plan "has general support from tise comunity." Well, it doesn't have my support and 1 would sug- gest tisat the only reason MRC thinks it doea have general support is that most of the community are unaware of tise situation or believe tisere is notising tisey can do about it. Tise people I talk ta ail say the same thing: they like the "small- town" feel of Milton, they don't want it ta become another Brampton or Misaissauga, and they wonder wbo does support tise proposed expansion. 1 understand that a request has been made by a citizen in Milton to pump up the Clasa Environmental Asseasment Study of the James Snow Parkway ta an Individual Environmental Assesament, bot that she's being asked ta withdraw that request. She does not intend ta do so, in fact, is trying ta raise awareness of the issue. I support her requeat, as 1 also feel that this proposai needa more discussion.
