COMMENT Commitee made good decison in allowing dig nhe committee of adjustmnent used sound judgment voting in favour of a land variance to allow an archaeological dig at a Second Line site in Campbellville. While the neighbours' concernis about noise, traffic and effects on the Niagara Escarpment are valid, they have been addressed by the London Museum of Archaeology as well as through conditions set out in the approval. As reported elsewhere in today's new'spaper, the museum bas amended its original plans significantly in deference to the neigh- bours. Now the residents should give a littie, too. Let's keep in mind that this is not a situation in which a developer is tiying to alter the area permanently. Granted, the dig will be conduct- ed over a 15-year period. But no construction will occur and we trust that researchers will take the appropriate steps to ensure harmony with both area residents and nature. We hope neighbours won't appeal the committee decision, but will express any concerns directly to museum director general Dr. Bill Finlayson, who we see as accommodating. THE CAIVADL4N CHAMPION Dear Editor: Re: "Changing the rules is not fair play" by Richard Bramwell May 7, 1999. Having lived in the Milton ares for most of 50 years, I think it is important to realize that many of the country roads in this ares were neyer intended bo be used by large volumes of traffie travelling at high ss. With the increased traffic over the years, 1 don't think it at al unreasonable ta ask that people slow down a littie, not only for the safety of those that live on those roada, but also for the safety of those that, use them. I can remember using my bicycle on roads like the Fifth Line and neyer seeing another vehicle. You can't do that now. Then, there are the domestie and wild animais that are sometimes found on the road. They probably shouldn't be there but it would be a small consolation being in the right when the front of your vehicle is smashed up and you are late for work anyway. if you choose to live where you have to use these roads for com- muting, maybe it would make sense to, leave five minutes earlier and enjoy the drive a little bit. You would be mooe assuired of getting wheoe you are going, probably be a little more relaxed and more Pro- ductive when you arrive. You might see a friend or something of nature that you have neyer seen befooe. For those of you that think you are so important that you can ignore the safety of those around you, 1 hope that you are the only your carelessness and that your fate will flot cause too much pain to those that love you.
