Schuyler Home Hardware and Building Centre, owned by Milton residents Larry and Lois Schuyler, placed firat in its dis- trict in a recent in-bouse competition for botb 1997 and 1998. "We feel pretty good about it," said Mr. Scbuyler. "We've got to keep striving to get better every year." Tbe Milton district encompasses about 36 stores in tbe Niagara escarpment and Kitchener area. Overaîl, judges looked at 960 stores in 19 districts tbrougbout Canada. The stores were judged on retailing, merchandise presentation, staff performance and overail store quality. The Scbuyler store opened in 1973 and now employa about 28 people. For tbe next year, employees will be wearing lapel pins commemorating tbeir award. Mr. Scbuyler credîts bis staff for belping tbe store corne out tops twice in a row. "We bave some staff members wbo bave been bere for over 20 years," be said. "Our staff is a big reason we did s0 well." As a resident of Milton, Mr. Scbuyler said be is betier able to understand tbe needs of bis customers. "You get to knoW your customer. We bave a great customer clientele bere in Milton." To give back to bis customers, Mr. Scbuyler makes sure bis store participates in community events sucb as Curl for Cancer. Business bas cbanged some in tbe 26 years Mr. Scbuyler bas been at tbe belm of Home Hardware. A computerized inventory systemn means tbe store can offer a greater variety tban in tbe past, witb 30,000 items in stock. As well, customers tbemselves bave cbanged. "Tbey under- stand wbat tbey're looking for mucb better," be said. "Tbere's more information out tbere." Do-it-yourself sboppers bave corne out in larger droves of late. "People are trying to save wberever tbey can," be said. Anotber cbange is tbe number of women wbo are taking on tbe do-it-yourself tasks. "In tbe past it was always a maie tbing," said Mr. Scbuyler.
