Drury students couldn't hear the applause, but rel- ished every second Eof it ail the saine. With overwbelming approval from, bath tbe audience and judges' panel, a trio of teens from Milton's deaf school were tue toast of this year's International Creative Arts Festival - held April 8 to il in Northbrook, Illinois. Under the direction of coach Patti Trofimenkoff, aIl three of tue students took top honours in their age groups. This dlean sweep was the latest in a long series of arts awards for tue local scbool. "I'm very proud of them. Tbey ail did such a fantastic job," said the school's dramna teacher and longtime coordinator of tue 'Dancing Hands' chorus. "It was bard ta, believe how well they did, even as it was unrolling in front of me." Ms Trofimenkoffs daughter Valerie and Lisa Astrorn - a Rotary Club International exchange student from, Sweden - were parrners in the 15 and over class and won for their dancing inter- pretation of Bette Midler's 'Rose'. Recalled Valenie, 'We knew we needed to be cool up on stage but were kind of nervous anyway. I was rigbt behind Lisa at one point and could feel ber shaking. But besides starting a littie earlier than the music everything went pretty good." Lisa said she was shocked when tbe duo's videotape - sent to the festival's qualifying committee earlier this year - was deemed best in Region 3, wbicb com- prises Ontario as well as 13 American states. "We hadn't been practising together for very long so it was 50, exciting when we got the caîl about winning," she said. To say the least, that tbrill was magnified several times over when they actually competed at the international showcase and came out on top. Through American Sign Language (ASL) and interpretative dance steps, the girls illustrated a fiower bloomning and made the popular love song corne alive tbrough a visual scope rather than a vocal one. "TMe idea was ta make the audience and judges understand the message, that fiow- ers are like love," added Lisa, wbo goes back to ber bomeland at the end of the school year. Meanwbile, Vance Youngs didn't so mucb inspire onlookers as he did mesmer- ize tbemn. The entbusiastic youth used card tricks and many other acts of illusion to wow the crowd and finish in a first-place tie with a teen frmLondon in the 12 to 14 year divi- sion. "There was an American guy in my group wbo had won the festival seven times in a row. Wben I found that out I got a littie paranoid," adsnitted Vance, whose sbowmansbip landed him a role in the HBO movie Dead Silence a few years back with well known deaf actoess Marlee eses KIDS on page 22 E.C.
