A project to replace four of the Burlington Skyway's 46 expansion joints will mean traffic tie-ups in both directions, warned Ministry of Transportation project engineer Susan Boot. The seven-week project will likely keep traffic backed up for 4.5 kms at peak times, causing delays of about 20 minutes per trip. Signs are already in place on the highway warning of the work. An alternate route till be advised at the time. The project is the result of nine-years of mainte- nance work on the joints. They have now worn out enough to need replacing. The work is designed to delay traffic as little as pos- sible, said Ms Boot. "We studied traffic flows and realized that there's more traffic in this area in the summer," she said. "We wanted to do it in the spring to get it out of the way." Crews will work on both Toronto-bound and Niagara-bound bridges to get the work done as quick- ly as possible, said Ms Boot. "It probably means the contractor will have to use multiple crews and work around the clock," she said. "It's quite aggressive." Tie work is scheduled to be completed May 20.
