Time for more txrelief We'd like to take MP Julian Reed at his word that next year's federal budget will bring some tax relief. It's about time. There really hasn't been much of that from the feds. Granted they have brought spending under control to a large extent, and balanced the national books, but there is stili much to be done in ternis of both increasing the purchasing power of the beleaguèred middle class and attacking the monstrous accumulated debt. The Liberals should be given credit for a certain amount of fiscal prudence, if for no other reason than that they finally sensed the national mood and acted on it, when their predecessors did flot. But the fact is there is stili too much taxation in Canada, and a par- tial reason for that is because- various governments shift financial bur- dens to other levels, then proudly declare that they have balanced their ledgers. The Grits get an easy ride in Canada because the vote from the right, if there is StiR such a thing beyond narne only, is so badly split. So it is again to the credit of the Liberals that they have bothered to corne as far as they have, since no viable governing alternative is like- ly to challenge themn for power in the next election. More of the same, please. New leaf for Couneillor Furik? What's with Councillor Ron Furik lately? He's corne out swinging on issues, speaking his mmnd, staking out positions. He used to be criticized as a fence sitter. Now he's starting to look more like a leader. Hopefully we' h see more of this, since he's a good counterweight for the more right oriented bloc on counicil. That #%é*& 'F' wc OUR READERS WRITE Editorial about water was misleading, says reader who believes fight can go on Dear Editor: Rob Kelly, your editorial of Fcbruary 19, 1999 ix misleading. Blendcd water is still nlot a donc deal. Truc, there have been many studies of the water system, unfortu- nately they have been based on apparently false assumrptions. The result, as usual, is that more taxpay- ers' money has been wasted. Wc are extremcly concemced that more money ix about to be spent unneceasarily, on a new water pipe fromt Lake Ontario. It appears that one additional water wcll wilI allow the existing water systeru to ser- vice phase one of thc devclopment witbout forcing us to drink Lake Ontario watcr. There arc a growing number of people who, through Carol Gustafson's efforts, have become awarc of the situation. We do flot think this ix a donc deal by any means. I encourage residents to get involved, join Carol in the fight to kccp Milton watcr separate froin Lake Ontio water, wc ail have much tw gain by kecping our water safé. S. Milton ~rd is everywhere now What's up with the F word? Is it my imagination, or does evcrybody use it aiow? Ta it even a swcar word anymore? I know, I know, these are pressing questions in an otherwise trivial world. I assume I can discuss t.his Copic, considering editor Rob Kelly is probably thinking of chang- ing the heading of bis coluin to: Fake Orgasms And You. When I was a kid, the F word was one you could use once you'd gone under thc bridge and lit up a cigarette. It made you feel like you werc getting away with something. Nobody 1 knew as a kid would ever dreain of saying that word around adults, unless they hap- pcned tw be nanning away ai thc saie time. And neyer did we heur an adult say it Chemselves. A number of ycars ago, whilc having a family dinner at my father's hoeuse, somcbody men- tioned that somcthing didn't taste so good. "Ycah," my youngest daoaghter remadced calmly. "lIt Castes like s-."l Wc ail froze for a split second and then laughed our asses off. Ass is a word you can now say on Celevision, and use in print. That means it's acceptable in cvcryday language. It didn't used to be. How did it become Chai way? Who decided? I stilI think it's uscd a ile slyly and smirking- ly, but it's stilI used. The cheer we uscsijrr rep sofiball when I was coaching in Bolton last ycar wcnt like this: "Wrle are Bolton, wc're tirst class, we are bier to kick your ... ayyyyyy Bolton!" Thcy weren't supposed to say thc actual word, but Chey aIl did, and I told thern if their parents said anything, to remiemrber I told thern not te. This ix actually the first timc T' ve uscd the word ass in print. It kind of gives me a feeling of freedoru. Really, it's been a long ime comfing. Hcck, so much Chai we do concerns our ass. We siC on our asses, we Chreaten to kick somcone's ass, wc move our asses. And none of Chai has anything to do with Uic synonyru for donkey. Altbougb, both cas lic appropriate. For example, sime of you might tbiink your boas ix an ass, ai dic sanie time as you're kissing his ass. The S word ix ncxt te conne out of thc closet, I think. To tell yoa dhe tnath, it might okay, considering 1 didn't even thin] write the word "orgasm"'in afamilyt Butthe F word? Ohhh, Idon't hin] There isn't anybody who hasn' word, or probably used it, so it' a would be offending many people. ' many movies that don't have it, and they show those movies on tele silence those parts, we ail know w saying. I know a popular sports television who uses l evexy second word. He difficuit it was te talk '*TV Calk" at 'TV CaJk" was différent Chan Uic norm because it contaiaed no swear words. I'mi stili waiting for Nim we slip, and ay: "TMat was a greai f- goal! 4,, I have we admit I use thc F word on occasion, n th e but usually only if I'mi mad or astounded.
