That was tihe message that came out of a breakfast meeting organized recently by tise Halton Industry Education Council. The counicil, which links educators witis industry and business people, organized the breakfast to focus on initiatives ta help Young people find work. Brian Smith, regional director of the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, noted tisat youth unemployment and under- employment is "one of our Most pressing problems." About one million Canadians between thse ages of 15-29 years old are unem- ployed and, at the end of 1998, tise unem- ployment rate for Young people was dou- ble tise national rate. The problem is a complex one, admotted Mr. Smith, who pointed ta declining wages, global conditions and tise tinancial cnancis that has slowed govemment contri- butions ta help deal witis youts unemploy- ment. "But tise cost of losing tisis figist is enormous," he added. Along witis tise social costs of taking care of unemployed youth, society loses a tremendous investment in their education and Young people tisemselves suifer from a losa of skills, confidence and ambition. To deal with tise problem, Mr. Smith said Young people need ta develop tise right skills ta match t<Iayrs jobs. Society Must look attse affordability of post-sec- ondaay education, while parents and teach- ers need ta leam about tise wide range of good jobs that don't require a university degree. "Businesses of ail sizes also have a raie to play," he added. Companies sisould consider hiring co-op students and intems ta provide them with real life experience, as well as taking part in apprenticeship and mentoring programs, Mr. Smith said. Thse Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF), a joint initiative of the Royal Bank and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, is always looking for industry partners ta get involved. A community-based program, tise CYBF offers- lass ta unemployed Young people ta allow tisem ta start tiseir own businesses.
