www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, May 2, 2013 | 8 Residents urged to drop off their unused prescription medications On Saturday, May 11, the Halton Regional Police Service will take part in a province-wide public safety initiative to encourage Ontario residents to dispose of old and unused prescription medication in a secure, environmentallyfriendly manner. Prescription Drug Drop-off Day is to keep people from abusing medications not prescribed for them. Police said in recent studies, 24 per cent of surveyed teens admitted misusing prescription medications at least once within the previous year with most of the teens taking the medication from home. Common prescription drugs being misused include opioid pain relievers (such as oxycodone), anti-depressants and stimulants. The Controlled Drug and Substances Act (CDSA) prohibits anyone from possessing oxycodone or any other prescribed medication without a prescription. It is a criminal offence to offer or sell a prescribed medication to another person and purchasing another person's prescribed drugs is also illegal. On May 11, residents can visit Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd., or Halton Regional Police Service Headquarters, 1151 Bronte Rd., to drop off their unwanted prescription medications anytime between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. People are asked to pass the medications to a police of cer who will be present. Drop-off locations can also be found in Acton at the Halton Police Service 10 Division, 315 Queen St., in Halton Hills at Halton Hills Town Hall, 1 Halton Hills Dr., in Milton at the Milton Sports Centre (rear lot), 605 Santa Maria Dr., and in Burlington at the City of Burlington Operations Centre, 3330 Harvester Rd. The Ontario Provincial Police Service announced, Wednesday, they support the initiative and will be working with police across Canada to draw attention to the public safety concern that is prescription drug misuse. The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP), Ontario government and Public Safety Canada also support the drop-off day. The pearl... as timeless as you, mom.
