Student athletes in basketball, hockey, soccer finalize university plans for next year Oakville's Regis Ivaniukas has committed to McGill University. The 6-foot-4 guard at Holy Trinity will join a Redmen team that went 11-5 and won the Quebec university basketball title. Ivaniukas helped Holy Trinity win two straight Halton basketball titles and finish fourth at this year's provincial high school championship. The Laurier Golden Hawks continued to add to its Oakville contingent with the commitment of St. Thomas Aquinas' Owen Coulthard. The 6-foot point guard will join his brother, Will, at Laurier. The Golden Hawks went 8-13 last season, finishing fourth in the Ontario University Athletics' West Division. Abbey Park's Rasheeka Gunn has committed to Cape Breton University. Gunn was named the MVP of the Hamilton Spectator Classic in December as she led the Halton all-star team to its first title since 2008. She also won a gold medal at the Ontario Summer Games in 2010. The Capers went 6-14 last season. Oakville resident Jimmy Cusan recently committed to Lake Forest College for the 2013-14 season. Cusan collected four goals and seven assists in 28 games for the Oakville Blades after being acquired from the Mississauga Chargers midway through last Ontario Junior Hockey League season. He added two goals and an assist in three playoff contests. Lake Forest College is a four-year private liberal arts college in Lake Forest, Ill. Long-time Oakville Soccer Club player Braden Culver has signed with the University of Buffalo. Culver began playing soccer as a Timbit house league player at the OSC and continued with the club through to the under-18 age level. The Bulls, who narrowly missed qualifying for the conference tournament last season, will begin their 2013 schedule Aug. 30 at St. Bonaventure. 27 | Wednesday, May 1, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Titans fall to Saints The Oakville Titans fell to 1-1 on the Ontario Lacrosse Association senior B season with an 11-7 loss to the St. Catharines Saints Saturday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Mason records milestone with 100th career victory The season may have ended without playoffs for Oakville's Steve Mason, but he did end his fifth NHL campaign on a positive note. Mason turned aside 44 shots and was named the game's first star in the Philadelphia Flyers' 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators Saturday. The win was the 100th of Mason's career. The 2009 Calder Trophy winner as the NHL's top rookie enjoyed a strong finish to his season after being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers by the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2006 NHL draft. In seven games with the Flyers, Mason went 4-2-0 and posted a 1.90 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage.
