Drama made impact on crew continued from p.14 her fault, because she's not doing it for herself," Schoner-Saunders observed. Mother Courage is full of contradictions and juxtapositions. It's said Brecht wrote the work in the belief an audience could either think or feel, but not both. Guided by this principle, the playwright, through the work, attempted to separate audiences from their emotions and so force them to be critical of the unfolding events. It's a difficult play to stage -- a challenge the students met head on. At the beginning, the teens spent two to three hours, four times a week at the school working, then they made it three nights a week, but put in longer hours. Leading up to opening night, the students would stay behind until 8 p.m., then 9:30 p.m. and in their final week until 10 p.m. One night, they were asked to leave by the custodial staff when they were still hard at it at the school at 11 p.m. Schoner-Saunders said the experience was invaluable for all involved. Every time they got together, the students held `circle time', where they shared ideas. The young director said a lot of the cast members expressed feelings they never shared before and some said the experience has made drama important to them. For Schoner-Saunders, drama has been important since Grade 9 when he auditioned to act in two plays. Since then, he's acted and directed student productions at the school each year. "That's a lot of what White Oaks drama is all about and I'm really happy other students are getting this experience in their Grades 9 and 10 years that I got in my Grade 9 year," he said. Schoner-Saunders has been accepted to Queen's University for commerce, the University of Western Ontario for philosophy of politics and economics, and to the Richard Ivey School of Business. Though all are business programs, he said drama will remain part of his life after high school. 21 | Wednesday, May 1, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com LOCAL FARMS...
