Children will go silent Thursday Thousands of youths across North America, including Oakville, will go silent Thursday (April 18) in solidarity with their peers across the globe who are silenced by poverty and exploitation. Local youths will participate in Free the Children's ninth annual We are Silent campaign. Participants are asked to be silent by voice, but to take action through social media, such as by joining up with Free the Children's ambassadors to speak out in support of young people silenced by the denial for their basic human rights. Participants collect pledges for every hour they stay silent, up to 24 hours. Local ambassador for the cause, Molly Burke, can be reached on Twitter at @ MollyMetoWe. Oakville schools participating in the campaign include New Central, E.J. James, Post's Corners and Munn's elementary schools, as well as St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Thomas Aquinas and White Oaks high schools. Burlington's John William Boich and Orchard Park elementary schools will also participate. In Milton, P .L. Robertson, W. I. Dick, Holy Rosary and Our Lady of Victory elementary schools, as well as Craig Kielburger Secondary School will take the silence pledge. Holy Cross Catholic School in Georgetown is also participating. We are Silent, formerly known as Vow of Silence, helps raise awareness and money for children silenced by poverty and exploitation. Free the Children encourages people to take a stand on social media by using the hashtag #WeAreSilent on Twitter.
