Paul Van Zutphen, 60, who spent more than 30 years with the fire department before retiring last fall, died March 29 while with his wife, Judy, in Barbados. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Glen Oaks Memorial Gardens in Oakville tomorrow. A memorial service will be held at St. Matthew's Parish in Oakville at 1 p.m. Thursday. David Welch said Van Zutphen, who had two daughters, Allie and Laura, was swimming off Crane Beach when two lifeguards were called to help him as he appeared to be having difficulty in the water. The lifeguards performed CPR on shore, but Van Zutphen was pronounced dead at the scene. Mississauga Fire Chief John McDougall, who worked with Van Zutphen for five years in the 1980s, said he was a "leader" and extremely popular with his former co-workers. Fire officials say Van Zutphen moved up the ranks within the fire department, becoming a district chief several years ago. One of the highlights of his career was watching his nephew, Kyle Van Zutphen, follow in his footsteps and join the ranks of the fire department in 2010. Advertorial Police special unit raids alleged resin lab Halton police raided a Queen Mary Drive apartment Monday finding what is believed to have been a cannabis resin lab. The raid was led by officers from Halton's specialized Integrated Drug, Gun and Gang Unit. The search was done under a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant in a unit of the building at 199 Queen Mary Dr. Police reported finding 30 gallons of a chemical precursor (isopropyl alcohol and cannabis marijuana) used to produce cannabis resin (hash oil). They also reported finding approximately 41 grams of cannabis resin, cash and a debt list within the apartment. Kevin Ropson, 45, faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, producing a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. Ropson was released and will appear in court in Milton May 14. Also charged is Brian Gavin, 45, who faces charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking, producing a controlled substance and breach of recognizance. Gavin was held for a bail hearing. Police removed the chemical precursors from the apartment as evidence and to ensure the safety of residents at the Queen Mary Drive building.
