Luck plays big part in Gardiner 's re-election By DENNIS SMITH Special to The Champion With a bit of help froni Lady Luck, Ethel Gardiner was re-elected chair of the Halton District School Board last Wednesday. Ms Gardiner and new vice-chair Debbie Marklew were both chosen by a blind draw afiter tie votes for both positions. Ms Marlew was elected over Oakvîlle Trustee Lynn Roberts. T'he chair froni Halton Hilîs was elected to the top job over Burlington Trustee Sheila Flook for the sec- ond straight terni. 'ni very pleased to be chair for another year. I look forward to working with every trustee," said Ms Gardiner. "I congratulate Trustee Flook, who did just as well as I did, but it was the luck of the draw." Aftcr each tie vote, candidates subrnitted their narnes to the ballot box for a blind draw. The winning name was then pulled out by Halton regional clerk Joan Eagleshani. who was brought in after the board agreed to have a non-staff member tabulate votes. Both candidates, in their second ternis as trustees, told colleagues they have the experience needed to serve as chair. Ms Gardiner said there were niany rapid changes last year and the board must do more than handle daily operations. "We have to be visionaries and policy setters for the system if we're to serve students well," she said. "We're here for students, staff and ail the stakehold- ers. We niust be leaders and we miust believe that what is worth doing is worth doing well." Milton Trustee Erica Andrew cited Ms Gardiner's nunierous leadership qualities when noniinating her.
