So says club manager Ken Van de Haar, wbo recently started a youtb exercise program - wbicb is somewhat rare within private sector fitness circles. "A lot of parents have told me that with aIl the cutbacks their kida aren't getting enough exercise at school," he said. "The pro- gram runs three times a week. It's primarily designed for teenagers, but we've got a few younger kids as well." Van de Haar says the club's youth program holds an advantage over similar ventures at the school level - where he suggests proper supervision isn't always possible. He remarked, "The problem is these kids, especially the boys, will often try to outdo each other, wicb can lead to injuries. "Here, we're able to control that." The programn currently includea 30 members and is rnm by per- sonal trainers Steve Lidstone and Collette Watts. Variety of programs Their Fitness For Teens clasa is one of several programa avail- able at GoodLife, who according to Van de Haar have expanded to include most age groups in the community. A couple of their intructors regularly visit seniors' homes while a qualified expert bolds pre and post-natal fitness classes wbenever the demand is there. Concentrated one or two-day classes are also held regularly for the more elite or serious athlete, wbile plans are in the works to introduce both swing dance and kickboxing lessons. "Rigbt now we've got roughly 1,400 members which is terrific for only being open seven months," said Van de Haar. "However, we've got the potential for mucb more." The club manager said is staff are coming up on a particularly cballenging period wben many members will indulge in holiday feasting and subsequently feel guilty about ruining the work tbey've done throughout the past year. "Don't go over to Aunt Edna's house and refuse ber food, juat maybe cut back on.the portions a little," advises Van de Haar. "TMe fact is, the body works in hilîs and valîcys au if you deny yourself now you're more likely to binge later. "It's what you do moat of the year that matters. Having three rink rats in tbe family, he said, bas made things quite bectic over the years - especially during a stretch when tbey were al playing rep. "One year we went to 16 dif- ferent tournaments and over 120 ganses. At least one of the boys bad a practice or game every night of tbe week," Jobnston said. WVhile at times the family bas felt that tbere weren't enougb bours in the day, at otbers al their running around bas been in vain. A case in point was a few years ago wben on one particu- lar Saturday ganses in Port Credit, Milton and Burlington were ail canceled - unbe- knownst to the Johnstons until they actually reacbed each des- tination. Motber Henrietta says it's flot s0 much tbe hustle and bustle of getting the boys to the arena that weighs on ber but rather begins. "Being tbe mom of tbree goalies is bard. You want them to stop every shot aIl the time and it can get quite nerve wracking. Often it'a tough to watcb" Her sons hold a much differ- ent opinion of tbeir lîfe between the pipes. Said Tim, "As a goalie you get a lot more attention. You're always a big part of the game one way or another." The brothers point out that despite tbeir sinilar stations in tbe world of hockey, each bas individual strengths and strate- gies witb which to tbwart opposing snipers. "Tim covers more net than we did at is age and is proba- bly better at reading the flow of a ganse," said Mike, wbo tends the twine in senior bouse league and is believed to be the quickest of the tbree.
