"When I compare it to the calîs I get on other issues, there is a concern there," said Milton regional Councillor Rick Malboeuf, wbo has received about 10 calîs on the subject. Mr. Malboeuf brought the issue up at the end of Halton Reginn's healtb and social services committee meeting Tuesday. "People on the streets talk <o you about it. It's a sore spot."1 The nipple is tihe result of reports citing elevated levels of chionine byproducts such as trihalomethane. It bas been found in water and linked with cancer. Milton bas been cbloninating its water - in accor- dance with a provincial requirement - for three years now. Chlorine is added <o most water systems as an inex- pensive disinfectant. Despite <is iatest round of criticism, thse chionina- ion of Milton's water came just in time, said Halton Region's chief medical officer, Dr. Robert Nosal. Water tests in the eariy I1990's bad revealed higb levels of coliform, a type of bacteria <bat ac<s as an eariy warning signal. "Coiformn is an indicator organism. I< indicates <bat more pathogenic bactenia could get in," explained Dr. Nosal. "Years ago you used <o have typhoid breakouts. The reason you don't get <bat now in Nortb America is because of tbings like cblorine." Trihalomethane is actualiy a resuit of cblorine mix- ing witb vegetative matter. In other words, ground level water supplies tbat mingle with ground vegetation are most at risk. In Milton's weil system, <bat apparently isn't a con- cem. "Milton bas deep welis. You don't get <bat kind of organic matter," said Dr. Nosal. -You need <o be assured <bat it's a safe suppiy." To ensure <bat is thse case, tise water is monitored. Tbe resuits seem easy <o swailow. The accepted standard for tribalomietbane is 100 midcrograins per litre of water. In Haiton Is and Milton, tbe level is at or under 10. Oakville and Burlington bave sigbtly bigiser lev- els, somewbere in tbe 20-30 range, but stilI weli beiow tbe accepted standard, said Dr. Nosal. Tisese factors were looked at before any cblorine went into Milton's water, noted Dr. Nosal. "Tbe key message is we were well aware of <is information," said Dr. Nosal. "We knew al <is and it didn't affect our decision at the time." Regionai Cbair Joyce Savoline said <bat wbile Halton believes in cblorinating water, tbe issue is actuaily a provincial one. "We're certainly cbiorinating Milton's water. We're of tbe opinion <bat it's a safety measure for tbe people of Milton," sise said. "However, the absolute au<bority remains tbe Province, tbe Ministry of Environment and tbe Minister of Environment." *BANAli H*UAN RIGHTS DAY - EC. 10 heecan be no abt watever that f theday star of jstie. wfchIhecodof tyranny hve obscure. wee f0shed I11,Hht po mn.the face 0fthe earfh would be conletely lransfrmed.* - from the Bahal wutngs LOCAL: 878-0011 REGIONAL: ................1.800433-3284 NATIONAL: ................ 1-905-889-8168 GLOBAL:-...................www.bahai.org ....... ...or www.onecountry.org Grace Anglican churcli 317 Main St. E., Milton the Church on the Hill 878-2411 Rev.
