Millennium planning group looks for ideas and people By IRENE GENTLE The Champion Got any plans for the millennium? If so, the Millennium Committee of Milton wants to hear them. The committee is a planning group of volunteers with a mandate to ensure Milton's millennium bash goes off with a bang. They have distributed a questionnaire ail over town to get the inside scoop on how Milton residents would like 10 celebrate the world entering its next I ,000-year phase. "We've asked people to prioritize what they'd like to see," said the Town of Milon's Joy Anderson. Once collected the information will be on the table at a November 26 millennium planning public meet- ing a 7:30 p.m. in the Seniors' Activity Centre (500 Childs Dr.). The meeting will attempt 10 crystalize what is right now little more than a desire 10 make a celebration happen. The question is how. "A number ot people have called the Town asking if they were planning something for the millennium year," said Ms Anderson. The result of these calîs was a public meeting held earlier Iis year. That drew 40 people with suggestions ranging from the creation of a millennium ime cap- sule 10 the development of a mnillennium park. Other options include a sommer 2000 reunion, aimed at bringing former Milton residents back to the fold for a day of festivities. A series 0f competitions, including the first millen-j nium baby or first person to take 2000 seps, are also possibilities for getting Milton 10 catch millennium fever. It is hoped the committee will plan events through- out the new millennium year, especially in December 1999, sommer 2000, and December 2000. The first step, though, is t0 formalize the committee itself. t is hoped that a chair will be elected at the upcoming public meeting, said Ms Anderson. To suggest a chair call Joy Anderson at 875-1681 or Jennifer Reynolds at 878-7252, ext. 180.
