'he committee is expected to start meeting in the new year. "Why would we want to change it?" lie said. "It' s part of our retrement compensa- tion package." Mr. Caldwell said retirement gratuities go back as far as 35 years and have histori- cally been an impetus for teachers to go to work when sick. "lIt lias saved the board on supply teacli- ers' salaries," lie said, adding contact with many children means more risk of illness. "There are a lot of flua and colds over the season and even cases of pink eye and head lice." Mr. Caldwell also said many other busi- nesses have retirement packages for employees. "Different businesses calculate it differ- ently. Sometimes it's based on vacation pay," lie noted. Mr. Caldwell added when teachers retire it usually saves on salaries, because the replacement is often a new teacher starting at a lower rate. The top annual salary rate for Halton teachers is $65,000, while entry level rates are $28,000 for elementary teachers and $30,000 for secondary teachers. "I don't think it's an issue," Mr. Caldwell said about retirement gratuities. "We're not looking for any changes at al." Teachers are allowed 20 sick days a year and are eligible for the retirement gratuity once they've accumulated at least 200 sick days. Payments are based on the lesser figure between accumulated sick days and the 50 per cent cap of the final year's salary. Ten consecutive years' service with the board is normally required to be eligible. GMT A FRESH START. Get SOLUTIONS now for.
