SWALLOWING ASSESSMENT SERVICE AT MDH Swallowing assessment and consultation ser- vice is provided by Speech-Language Pathology in Rehabilitation Services at Milton District Hospital. Many swallowing problems can be identified anid recommen- dations made to improve functioning. Swallowing problems are identified by clini- cal assessment and/or direct viewing of the swallowing process. The effects of modifica- tions in food texture and eating practices are studied in order to develop recommenda- tions which support safer eating. Direct viewing of the swallowing process is done through Videoflouroscopy Swallowing Study. This examination allows for observa- tion of the swallowing process under contin- uous x-ray. The Videofluoroscopy Swallowing Study is done in partnership with the Diagnostic Imaging Department at the Hospital. The Technologist operates the equipment, which allows the Radiologist to evaluate the structure of the swallowing mechanism, as appropriate, and the Speech- Language Pathologist to study the process of swallowing.
