~NTARI~ P <-r; ( The Rules of Golf Can Be Your Friend Perhaps one of the mot frustrating things about the game of golf is tbe many ruies and regulations that govern its play. The rules were established over 100 years ago and serve to proteet the integrity and sportsmanship of a truiy great game. Knowing your options wben confronted witb a situation that requires a ruiing cati greatly benefit your score. In several cases, the player bas the choice of two or more options when PLay the bal deciding how to proceed. Choosing the best as you find it! sor.A trail, that is wbat golf is ail about. One of the mot common questions 1 am asked as a Golf Professional is, "What dol1 do when 1 have it tbe bail into tbe water?" The explanation is important, because it couid save you several strokes. Here in a nutsheii is wbat you need to know: If the water or marsby area is marked by yelow stakes it is called a "water hazard." It is marked in yeilow to indicate tbat there is room to reasonably drop the bail (if you choose this one option) behind the water hazard. The otber type of water area is marked by red stakes and tbis is called a "lateral water bazard." Tbese are normally found running aiongside tbe golf hole, with no room to drop the bal fairly behind tbe bazard. The yelow staked "water hazard" provides you witb tbree options: " Simply play the bail as you find it in the bazard!! (Be careful not to toucb your club against the ground or anything else in tbe bazard wben setting up.) There is no penat or playing tbe bal in tbis manner. " Find the point wbere your bail entered tbe margin of the bazard. Standing bebind this point, uine up tbe point and tbe flag'in a straight uine. You may drop the bail on an extension of tbisine going as far back bebind the water bazard as you like aiong tbis ne. (Remember, tbis is tbe option that is not availabie if tbe bazard bas red stakes and runs beside a bole because you cannot drop anywbere beind il!) Tbe penalty for tbis is one stroke. " Play a second bail as close as possible to wbere you bit the original sbot into tbe bazard from. (Tbis is like a stroke and distance penalty.) The penalty for tbis is one stroke. If the water is marked as a "lateral water hazard" (red stakes) you bave the above three options and one more: *Find the point where the bail crossed the margin of tbe hazard. 'lake a tee and mark out two club lengths from this point but not moving dloser to the hole. You may now drop the bail within this mark and the point where your bail crossed the hazard. So if you can see, knowing bow to proceed cati give you confidence to move forward correctly. It may even save you some penalty strokes and change that double bogey into a coveted par!!
