On top of that, violence in some parts of the country gels wide-spread coverage in the news, 50 this adds more fuel 10 a reason for not con- sidering Mexico, despite the many wonder- fuI heaches, colonial streets, colourful mar- ketplaces, and historic places to visit. As for the 'troubles' with violence they are hsving mostly in one ares of Mexico - remember il is s very big country, and this activity is taking place swsy from tourist or historic areas you would visit. 1 GOT SICK! On my firaI visit t0 Mexico many, many yesrs ago (Puerto Vallarta - still one of my favourite places, such a hesutiful mix of the old and the new) - I got sick! Yes, I felI vic- t im t0 that 'revenge' thing, snd prohably rightly so, for the amount of food and drink I had that wss 'different' 10 my normal type and amount. And this is the catch - we are in s country with s third world designation, and end up eating and drinking the drinks and their produce without sny caution. Tlherein lies the prohlem - as in sny place and even here a1 home, we csn't overdo il in any one ares of food or drink, or we will likely have problema! And thinga have chsnged there. In Mexico, and msny other countries 100, the best guideline is - 'DON'T DRINK THE WATER' (the locals don't drink it ither - everybody drinks bottled water!), and as well, don't est foods which have heen washed in it. (The hotels and resorts have installed water systems which produce safe water' they use for drinking and cook- ing.) Places I ike ACAPULCO, CANCUN, COZUMEL, IXTAPA, LOS CABOS, MANZANILLO, MAZATLAN, PUERTO VALLARTA, COPPER CANYON, LA PAZ, GUADALAJARA, MEXICO CITY, and in the past year the YUCATAN cities of MERIDA and PROGRESSO, are just some of the many locations I have heen to over the many years since that first visit. NOT ONCE SINCE HAVE I BEEN SICK! So, the answer is - you can go there, have a wonderful time and enjoy this very interest- ing country, including the food and drinks, withoul a fear of illness - you just have 10 he careful of what and where you eat and drinkç, and the quantities, as you should any- where you go! SO, PLAN TO GO! There are so many great resorta, ecotours, s train trip through Copper Canyon (not to be missed!), a cruise on the Mexican Riviera, or see the ruins in the YUCATAN Peninsula.
