The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, Aug. il, 1998 -7 SO UR REA4DERS WRITE Man has différent take on state of Miii Pond Dear Editor: This letter is in response to the article that appeared on the Community Page dated July 21 -- 'Millpond committee wants action now'. Regarding the harvesting of weeds, these weeds keep the water clean and provide habitat for the fish in the pond. To keep the weeds oui would mean il would have to be barvested tbree times a year. The commit- tee says no one wiIl swim in the pond because of the weeds. To my knowiedge, no one bas swam in the pond for more than 35 years. The committee members say tbey have film from the 1970s and dlaim the water level was much higher. It only seems higher. The fact is the pathway was buit up 10 allow for wheelchair access and strolling, which means the water level is the same -- the path way is higher. They say the water in the pond is six feet deep. In fact, for the most part (roughly 95 per cent) it is between 24 and 30 inches deep. Tbey suggest Ibat the pond he dredged and the slt sold. In order îo accomplisb this, the pond would have- to be drained and allowed t0 dry before the sût couid be removed, and you cant imagine the stink that would come from this procedure. They dlaim lack of movement of water at the spili- way is evidence of no flow of waer. t is the middle of summer, and there is no flow of water anywhere. Tbey say there was a wooden wali at the west end of the pond four years ago. In fact, there has been no wali there for ai teast 35 years. They dlaim that the pond bas a long istory of being dredged wben in fact the lasI ime it was dredged was in the 1950s. One ting they don't address when discussing the foui odours around the pond is the slaugbter bouse at Sargents Farmn, wbicb is located beside the pond. The smell from wicb, naturally, is greally magnified in tbe summer beat. I bave fisbed in and around tbe Mili Pond for more than 40 years and I would suggest that Keith Timbers and Pal Duignan research tbeir facts and potential cost of their proposed solutions to tbe pond and the Sixteen Mile Creek before any action is taken. I would estimate that the dollar cost of Iis commit- tee's solutions t0 be in the range of $600,000 10 $1 million. 1 presumne the taxpayers in the town would be expected 10 help out with thse cost. In my opinion, and in ligbt of the upcomiàng devel- opment of land in Milton, the pond should be back- fiiled and made mbt playing fields. There may also lie witbin a potential solution 10 the huge skateboard and roiierblading population which is fast becoming a motorists nighlmare in thse town. In ciosing, before this committee of two or tbree do- gooders is aliowed 10 propagandize any furîher, 1 would expect tbaî a complete and un-biased sudy of the cost and environmental impact be conducted.
