At the age of 12, the brigbt young womnan was spon- sored by a well-known deaf Amnerican and attended school in the United States for several years, Ms Stutt Ms Umubyeyi, wbose parents and five siblings con- tinue to live in Rwanda, then retumned 10 her Afnican home, wbere next 10 notbing exists in education or service for deaf people. Fortunately for Ms Umubyeyi, ber story didn't end there. Five or six years later, tbe Rotary Club became involved and sponsored her 10 attend the Emest C. Drury School for the Deaf on Ontario Street. As a result of the upgrading, shte was accepted at Gallaudet, the only university tbat uses American Sign Language as the language of instruction.
