Active Milton woman turned 100 Wednesday By STEVE LsBLANC The Champion Winifred Motteram's secret to vitality may be somewbat mun of the milI, but it's certainly put ber in select company. The Milton woman tumned 100 years old Wednesday at ber Pine Street resi- dence, where she lives witb daugter Iris Innes and Iris' busband Bill. Ms Motteram - wbo lived tbrougb two world wars in England - attribut- es ber long life to "plain, active living." She still enjoys relatively good healtb and up until two years ago, wben she dislocated ber uboulder, sbe could be found gardening in ber backyard almi3st every day in tbe spring and summer. 'l began gardening many, many years ago in England. Duning the war we were encouraged to grow as mucb of our own food as possible," she recalled. Monday afternoon she received a special birtbday card from none other tban Queen Elizabeth. It included a pbotograph of tbe Britisb monarcb as wel as a celebration wisb. This came as a buge surprise to Ms Motteram, wbo ligbts up wben asked about the card. Ms Motteram left ber native England in 1980 tc, live witb ber last surviving daugbter. Said ber son-in-law Mr. Innes, "She came to stay witb us after ber other daughter passed away. She said she wanted to spend ber last few years with us. That was 19 years ago and she's probably good for another 19 years." In hber younger days, Ms Motteram owned a wool sbop that stili operates in England. She was an expert knitter, amateur painter and according to Ms Innes a "loving and devoted wife and mother." "She was always a vey active person," added Ms Innes. "My grandmotber lived to be 95 years old and now my mother bas reacbed 100 years. I guess we've got pretty gond genes in our family." Ms Motteram, wbo's still fairly independent, bas six grandcbildren and two grea-grandcbildren - witb a third on the way. Many of tbese family members will be on hand for ber official birtbday cel- ebration tomorrow (Saturday) from 2 to 4 p.m. at ber 296 Pine Street borne. Longtime frienda are also welcomed to attend.
