She overcomes obstacles to to embrace the martial arts e from STRIDES on page 19 Hogarth. -However, Quinn has an amazing spirit and she puts forth the extra effort needed to succeed." Although a relative newcomer to the local club, Quinn's involvement in karate goes back six years to when she was living in Victoria, British Columbia. Seeing the movie The Karate Kid was enough to get her hooked. Mom and dad had serious reservations. Not surpris- ing since their youngest daughter had just recently bast her hearing and was struggling with balance - resulting from a lengthy bout with meningitis. Determined not to shelter Quinn, the couple found a caring, understanding instructor who bit by bit helped improve his silent student's balance and self-esteem. Her martial arts training continued after the couple relocated to Toronto and later to rural Milton. "My mother sometimes attends the classes and interpoets for me but often I'm there by myseif," said Quinn, who attends E.C. Drury School for the Deaf. 'That's okay because sensei Hogarth is a wonderful instructor. "A boy in the class has a sister who is deaf and he can sign su that helps too." While Hogarth is her third instructor in the past six years, he's the first who has encouraged her to venture beyond the inter-club competiion level. His confidence and her ability translated into suc- cess last month at an open toumnament in King City. Quinn collected three top-IO finishes, including a sec- ond place showing in junior sparring. I was s0 happy when they gave me the tmophy that I almost cried," she recalled. 'There was a blind student cnmpeting (in formns) as well. After the competition I wefît up and told him how much of an inspiration he was to me." Over the years her list of athletic activities has grown to include basketball, volleyball, softball, soc- cer, swîmming and just recently tennis. Said father David, "Basically, if there's a sport out there Quinn wants to play it." Quinn was scheduled to be tested for her next colour belt - green with a black stripe - tbis week.
