According to representatives of the Halton Anti-Homophobili Committee being inside the closet is not easy to bear. Last Tuesday representatives of the homosexual community toid members of Halton's health and social services com- mittee that gays and lesbians are met with denision and outnight violence more ofien than with understanding. Councillors heard that some homosexu- ais are so uncertain of police response to a complaint of violence that they wiil not report incidents. Halton Chair Joyce Savoline said com- mittee members shouid approach the exists it can be addressed. Phili Ferreira, a Bishop Reding Secondary School student, told regional representatives that homosexuals are an invisible minority in Halton. He said because the minority is not seen people don't believe it exists. Mr. Ferreira suggested the school cur- riculum in Halton include a section on homosexuality to dispel myths and explan what it is to be gay. He added, information should also be available in libraries throughout the ares. "It affects homosexuals when they aren't listened too and are not taken seriously," he told the committee.
