While more of a formality than anything else after such a sublime season, Darren (Mini) Haydar was officially named the OHA Jr. A Player of the Ycar Saturday during an the annual awards gala in Belleville.. Although fellow candidates Ryan Penney of Bowmanville and Syracuse's Matthew Murley were certainly outstanding this past year, Haydar's accomplishments made him an overwhelmingly popular choice for the award. Darren Haydar The 18-year-old right winger breezed to the Provincial Jr. A League scoring titie while placing himself second on both the ail-time goals and total points leader board with 71 and 141 respectively. Walker sits ahead ot him in catch category. Mini also became just the fifth player in league history to post back-to-back 100-point seasons. His scoring surge won him the West Conference MVP award as well as the captain's 'C' for the West Conference Ail-Star team. Equally outstanding through the playoffs, he amassed 25 goals and 25 assists in 28 games - an aecomplishment which made the OHA selection committees dcci- sion that much casier. Haydar - who was vacationing in Aruba Saturday and unable to attend the ceremony - earns a $500 bursary as OHA Jr. A Player of the Year, which will corne in handy this fali when he begins a four-ycar stint at the University of New Hampshire. He'u attend the Division 1 school on a full scholarship. Podd jgets first win nf Pàola Milton's Mike Podd took advantage of the pole position to earn his tirst win of the year in the Canadian Vintage Modified class at Flamboro Speedway Saturday. Thue veteran racer took thc lead from the onset but was overtaken on the outside early by rookie Jue Arsenault of Burlington. Hounding his south Halton rival, Podd re-took the frontrunner spot on lap four and held on for the victory - despite a strong challenge from Oakville's A.J. Roper. Wheller was fourth Andy Wheller of Milton padded bis sea- son points lead in the Street Stock division with a fourth-place finish Saturday. He finished behind winner Gord Farnsworth of Flamboro and runners-up John Lammers and Brad Rodwell of Burlington and Caledonia respectively.
