The 57 instructors who were issued lay-off notices by the Halton District School Board in early spring have ail received letters of recaîl, most to their current posting, while an unknown number of new teacher hirings is expected, said the co-president of the Halton Elementary Teachers' Association (HETA). "Due to the large number of retirements this year, we could be in a hiring situation. We still have retire- ment (notices) coming in," said Ron Caldwell. The HETA co-president said about 80 retirement notices from teachers, principals and vice-principals have been submitted to the board since May 1. They were prompted in large part, he said, through changes made by the provincial govemment, which Iowered the retirnellt factor (age plus years ot expe- ne)lCfi)or teacilers tb 85 i oui90 wtlîoul llî>Il financial penalty. Mr. Caldwell said the deadline for teachers to declare their retirement intentions was May 31 but that his people were told by Halton board officiais they would accept such notices even after that. Halton board staff services superintendent Paul Anthony said the impending retrement of 18 staffers in elementary administration would add to the number of new teachers needed. Meanwhile, Mr. Caldwell hopes to maximize the number of new hirings. "We wiIl be having some but 1 don't know if it wilI be 10Oor 100." Mr. Caldwell admitted it will have to be negotiated with the school board and he expects officiais there to try te, minimize hirings, while he said he wiII push see TEACHERS' on page 20 WlOutdoor cIJS.
