A committee of Burlington counicil has agreed unan- imously to explore a possible amalgamation of Milton, Burlinglon and Flamborough. Milton Mayor Gord Krantz said he was informed a few weeks ago that the idea would be discussed by Burlinglon politicians. He said he fully expects a for- mal declaration of the intention t0 open taîks in the near future. However, he said he will ask Milton counicil how to proceed before accepting any invitation 10 meet. "I mentioned the idea to several counicillors infor- mally and they didn't seem too awfully thrilled or willing to buy into the possibility," said Mr. Krantz. The long time mayor said he views the idea with a little skepticism and wants to know what benefits there would be for Milton citizens. He said Burlington motives have t0 be explored, though he speculated councillors there are trying 10 create a municipality large enough 10 remain outside the extended bound- aries of Metropolitan Toronto. He said Burlington is looking some 50 years down the road. Mr. Krantz referred 10 a provincial plan floated about 18 months ago which suggested splitting Flamborough up between Hamnilton, Hatton and Cambridge. He added that he has long been on record saying Milton's boundaries are not sacrosanct. Mr. Krantz said he had not spoken t0 Flamborough Mayor Ted McMeekin. Milton and Flamborough share a boundary from about Derry Road through 10 just south of Highway 401. Milton currently includes lands through 10 almost Highway 7 just south of Guelph. Mr. Krantz suggested that Halton Huis also be involved in potential discussions. "I believe there wilI be restructuring of municipali- lies," said Mr. Krantz. "It will likely happen within fOve t0 seven years. If the current govemment is re- elected we' Il see significant changes. If they are not elected, good God only knows what will happen." Mr. Krantz said he is prepared t0 have a serious look at the possibilities. He pointed out that previous analy- sis suggests that Flamborough has substantial financial liabilities, mostly owing t0 ils large size, and few assets in tax revenues. "It can be difficult and emotional 10 split up a com- munity but I want t0 be open minded and measure the benefits," he said adding the issue of how t0 proceed may find ils way onto the next counicil meeting, slated for Monday April 27. "Plil admît the truth, the odds are that nothing will happen," said Burlington Mayor Rob MacIsaac, about a common future with Flambomough and Milton. "But I do think if's prudent for us t0 be speaking t0 our neighbours." Hfis comments followed a Burlinglon council meet- ing last week with Allan Tonks, the former Metro Toronto Regional Chairman, who is now preparing a s ee THREE-WAY on page 4 4eý
