The poblishen esenves the ight to categoize aiteeisements on deliien. Two zip for goN Score two for entrenched government and zero for public willd course of the Iast week in Milton. Not that we expected anything different. Joyce Savoline, the chair of Halton Region, was on hand loca damage control afler surrendering to the provincial govemment chlorine issue. Mayor Gord Krantz backed her up, emphasizingt it was tough luck that Milton lost this one, flot much could be dc was time to mun up the white flag. Also at Milton council, the status quo will prevail, with ir enough councillors to go around, despite the efforts of newcci Malboeuf to trim the bureaucratic sails a little. A modest tip of the hat to Wally Hunter and John Challinor, hov their futile attempt to cut back councillor pay. This is a wron approach, but their hearts seemed to be in the right place. On the chlorine issue, Ms Savoline made certain she unders point that Halton Region had neyer passed a resolution supportii nation of Milton water. Big deal. They weren't exactly leading against it, either. That was up to Jane and John Q. Citizen, thanl much. With regard to Milton council size, municipal politicians decid was better. The implicit argument here is that there is more tha important work to go around for everyone. That would be a stri nale if everybody on council was equally willîng and able to apl selves to such weighty matters. But they are not. A smaller, solid nucleus would have been better, even if they more money. Money isn't really the issue here, snce it doesr much one way or the other at this government level. Speaking of representation on panels and such, tokenism app on display at the Halton District School Board, which will adi dents to its deliberations - the public ones anyway, not the cl( sessions. Clearly, if one bas read the report published in last Friday's pal trustees have already adopted a condescending view of the stuci sentatives, fretting that two on the board could ho "double (Burlington's Sheila Flook)." Is it any surprise, though, that trustees such as Ms Flook expre cism? Would you let high school students take part in manager ings for your organization? Apparently this is fallout from Bill also a nonsensical proposition. Since teenagers can vote, perhaps one or two of them should members of Premier Mike Harris' cabinet as well. Or, at least Milton council. A thouglit for awa' The next time nominations for the Chambcr of' Commen awards come up, somebody should kccp in mind thc contrihuti by the local Jr. A hockey club. It is also worth noting that Merc agement puts heavy emphasis on academic development throul sity scholarships. The answer was apparent to the vast majority of us out Rob Kelly here - a most empathetic yes. This flag belongs anywhere in this country, inluding Quebec. C S The Bloc must still ho gloating -- for they had their way rd with you Liberals once again. 1 must admit, though, 1 found rc nul some t.omfort at the partys expense while watching the rL nua .losng ceremonies of the recent Winter Olympies. R. K. The Separtists must have really got their knickers in a knot when they saw our athletes from ail provinces carrying that huge flag, obviously with enormous pride. Your attempt to, portray yourself as a proud Canadian falîs short of the mark. In future, Mr. Reed, on issues as funda- mental as our Canadian flag, dont consult with the Bloc, randomly caîl some of your constituents for the correct answers. Elizabeth Harrison Milton Today's education systern has abandoned our chlldren Dear Editor: It was quite a long time ago that we stopped saying the Lord's Prayer in ail of our schools, and at the same time stopped teaching Christian values. We did this because we are "nice" Canadians and did flot want to offend people of other religions. We love our neigh- bours. Unfortunately, at this time there was an economic decline and parents found it necessary for both to work. Tired par- ents, with television providing an easy way to keep the chil- dren quiet, meant that the necessary teaching of knowing right from wrong was flot done. We "nice" Canadians are now scratching our heads won- dering why we have gang warfare in our schools. tt is flot only Richard Hodgins who is (and t quote) '1standing in bell," but -ail who have allowed our education system to abandon our children.
