The focus of the Canadian Cancer Society is to provide funds for patient services, sci- entific research, and education espe- cially in the field of disease prevention and health promotion. It is totally sup- ported by public donations, receiving no government aid. It is not part of the United Way. Locally, over four hundred volunteers participate in the April fundraising cam- paign, made up of the residential Canvassers, Daffodil Days and Denim Days Volunteers. Throughout the year, through the gen- erosity of many individuals in Milton and the surrounding areas, funds are raised by memorial gifts, sporting events and social gatherings such as HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING GAS & QIL INSTALLATIONS 878-2381 FAX: 878-1443 751 MAIN ST. In addition, the organization is always touched by personal efforts, such as was made by Micheal Lambert during April 1997, who to honour the memo- ry of his mother raised $ 400.00 from his sehool- mates and teach- ers at Bishop Reding High School. The Cancer Society's mission is the eradication of Cancer and the enhance- ment of the quality of life for people liv- ing with Cancer. A national organiza- tion, the Cancer Society provides its services to everyone regardless of their place of residence, by coordinating patient services locally with those ser- vices provided at the treatment cen- tres. The most consistent activity, of the local volunteers is the transportation component of patient services. Almost daily, at least two trips are made taking patients and sometimes their family members to the various treatment cen- tres in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton regions. These groups of peo- ple form an essential link between our community and the access to the bene- fits of the latest research and treatment methods.
