Eventually a frustrated Councillor Barry Lee causti- cally suggested counicil be reduced to tbree members. Following that lead, Mayor Gord Krantz countered by saying perhaps tbere should only be one member of' council, im. Mr. Lee topped that by airing the idea of scrapping Milton counicil to bave the tnunicipality nterge wtth Halton Hilîs. Witb regard to Mr. Maîboeur's motion to pare back coutteil numbers. -I dont like how tbis was brought up.' said Mr. Lee. "To brin- it to us this wav is jrtst stupid. It's just an attetnpt to score political points." There was plenty of enotion and anger during Monday's debate on process. bowever little was accotnplished. Motions for a public tmeeting and for a committee and survey approacb to the downsizing question were both defeated. Those wanting a reduced counicil were accused of subverting democracy. while tbose looking to main- tain the status quo were berated for hypocrisy. In the end tbe debate was deferred to, April 6. Several councillors suggested the only reason f'or a reduction would be the potential savings. "If it's money thats behind this, you can bave it al if you need it al," said an angry Councillor John Challinor. "I'm flot bere for the money; nobody is. If if is about democracy and representation. there is no issue." He said hce will flot support a reduction in counciI sizc but lie will support a reduction in court cillor pay, though hle added any reduction should bc a personal choice. Councillors currently make $11,685 and the tnayor miakes $34.775. Regional councillors take in atn extra $18,705. One third of ail council stipends arc tax free. Councillor Wally Hunter put forward a motion to reduce the pay of councillors. It will be dealt with April 6, when council is scheduled to debate its suze. Any reduction in council size will dovetail with the next municipal elections lated for the fal of 2001. Mr. Maiboeuf defended his motion for downsizing, saying several current councillors campaigned for a reduction in council sze. "If the previflus council had voted for it last year we wwald already be seeing the savings," said Mr. Malboeuf. "We have more councillors than fulI-time firet"tghters in this town. We should ask the public which they prefer." Mr. Maîboeuf said Mr. Challinor's appeal for democracy was suspect, clatmtng that Mr. Challtnor - ee DEBATE on page 18 Recreation Assistant - Summer Camps The successful applicant will be a highly energetic individual who will be responsible for tte coordination and operation of our 1998 summer camps program.
