Long term care facilities and hospitals have the opportunity to be surveyed in wh-at is called an accreditation process. This process is coordinated by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHA). The mission of this organization is to promote excellence in the provision of health care and service delivery. and the efficient use of resources. The Accreditation process is voluntary and is organized and administered by health care professionals under the guidance of CCHA. The first stage of the process is a self assessment. and staff at Allendale measured themselves against a set of nationally applied standards. The second stage is an on-site interview car- ried out by health care professionals who work in long term care facilities. Interviews were conducted and the various processes in place at Allendale to meet client needs were reviewed. The accreditation process is a client centered approach and facilities must demonstrate that their processes are client centered. Families, residents and staff worked hard preparing for the survey. The standards are comprehensive and when met, indicate that the facility is providing a level of excellence in health care services.
