~OUR READERS WRITE Good job Darlene and DBIA ke.ping downtown Milton alive and welI. In thîs day Dear Eitor:%xith ll t1c competiionfmiiithin lis and ie,ï IkarI. dtorstores, il's an effori ihati s needed more and more. 1 would lke to ongratulate Darlene Wasilkowsky Bruce Hood and the board of the DBIA for their strong effort in Milton Here's a different take on giving punishment Dear Editor: I teel for our cops, who go to great lengths to bring sleazy criminals into court, only to see them te get a wee slap on the wrist. 1 get angry at how they pam- per Paul Bernardo and make is life cushy. Prison inmates get anything they want, like pool tables and big-screen televisions. Who on earth iv responsible for this insan- ity? Anyway, I propose a new justice vys- terr. Jails would be used only for the three R's - rehabilîtation, reconciliation and repentance. This would include hard labour, chairs gang style, but without chains. Instead there would be deadly radio- controlled collars locked around inmates' heads. They would dig up toxic spilîs, lioe weeds, repair railroads and build up cities destroyed by earthquakes and loods. Those successfully completing the pro- gram would be set free, monitored via satellite and electronic chips. For any who simply cannot be broken there would be execution - next of kmn at their side, with the punishment televised on the 'Justice channel. First degree execution would involve dropping the condemned into a vat of boil- ing vegetable oil, second degree would mean hanging. Third would entail a pain- less shot in the head. 1 dont believe one need be a great scholar to figure out that not a lot of crimi- nais would be waiting on death row. Does this sound great? I think vo. What do you think? Ross Hingston Hornby Edftorial controversial Dear Editor: Your recent editoral 'So near, and yet so far' has drawn a lot of controversy from many of my friends and associates. Clearly haîf of us ind your article very negative and haîf feel it iv extremely posi- tive toward the future of Canada. We have a wonderful country with a definite opportunity to prove that we are a glowing example to the rest of the world and yet we are mired in old hat feelings of tradition and fear of changing into a new suit of clothing. Family pride -- now wouldn't that be something for aIl Canadians to be able to cherish? To go a step further, wouldn't il be a burden off most Canadian shoulders if we couple that with prîde for our leader and our country? Your analogy to a Greek tragedy was most interesting. In fact, 1 think what we are enacting here in our country these days could more aptly be called a 'Canadian tragedy' and .will remain vo until more Canadians wake up to tise obvious and vote for a responsible accounitable govern- ment. Whether your article was negative or positive iv immaterial. It did promote con- troversy and that in itself is most definitely positive.
